An elderly man suffering from a leg injury has been airlifted to hospital from Tennyson Down by the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter this afternoon (Monday).
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service were called to the Highdown area between Alum Bay and Freshwater earlier this morning, but due to the precarious position of the 69-year-old casualty, the assistance of HM Coastguard was soon requested at 10:40.
The call for help resulted in the mobilisation of The Needles Coastguard Rescue Team and Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team.
Once on scene Coastguard officers decided that due to the remote location and the gradient in the area, together with the icy conditions, the best option was to call in Coastguard Rescue 175 from Lee-on-Solent to airlift the casualty straight to hospital.
The man landed at St Mary’s Hospital in Newport at 12:15.
