There will be yet more disruption to Island Line services next week due to continuing industrial action by the union ASLEF – with no service at all on Tuesday. South Western Railway has confirmed that a revised timetable will be in operation on Bank Holiday Monday (6th May), as well as between Wednesday 8th and Saturday 11th May, due to a ban on overtime by ASLEF. On Tuesday (7th May), there will be no Island Line service between Ryde Pier Head and Shanklin at all as union members go on strike. This latest disruption comes following a turbulent time for Island Line, which has been hit by continued strike action, mechanical breakdowns, staff shortages and line closures since a £24million investment in the railway. A South Western Railway spokesperson has said:
“We are sorry to announce that, due to a ban on overtime working by the ASLEF union, along with planned engineering work, there will be disruption on the Early May Bank Holiday, Monday 6 May. A revised service will operate across our network so it is important that customers check before they travel. “Strike action will take place the following day, Tuesday 7 May, and we are asking customers to only travel if their journeys are absolutely necessary. We will run a significantly reduced service with large parts of our network closed, and trains will only run between 7am and 7pm. “The overtime ban will then continue from Wednesday 8 to Saturday 11 May which will again mean a revised service. Engineering work will take place on Saturday 11 leading to further service changes, so once again, we are encouraging customers to check before travelling. “We are very sorry for the disruption that this industrial action will cause and are very thankful for our customers’ continued patience.”

If you can’t run your business without forcing your staff to do overtime, you don’t have enough staff!
It’s not even season yet.
Nothing to do with short of staff more about getting the current workers to get of there lazy backsides
Feel free to jump on the train and tell the staff how you feel. I’m confident you won’t be quite as vocal. The staff all work full time hours. How does this make them lazy? There is an expectation that the staff work overtime to cover shortfalls but, just like any other company, overtime is optional having completed full hours. Your comments are absurd.
Island Line is part of South Western Railway (SWR) who during COVID conceded control to the Department For Transport (DFT) so they could be bailed out by the taxpayer.
– Don’t be fooled into blaming railway employees for the shortcomings of management (puppets) and politicians (puppet masters).
No mention of the scummy unions i see
I like chooo chooo trains
Ivy serel was right. Tar Macadam the entire stretch and have a private firm run battery shuttle bus service The track could then be used br cycle riders in far more safety than our drunk drugged drivers now.
Sack the greedy drivers for such a cushy job here with no Eastern Europe dross stealing cables etc. They don’t know how easy they have it
The government (dft) won’t authorise a payrise that is relevant to the job, but want to effectively dilute the hourly wage and dilute their pensions, on top of worse terms and conditions. And the offer is a paltry 4% . Let’s not forget that our very own MP got a 5% payrise on £87k a year for doing nothing extra. Last but not least, they lose pay for striking, so it really is a last resort for them, and they haven’t had a payrise since before covid. The blame lies solely with the tory government
They are just greedy and the majority of the public agree and are sick of these lazy bunch of workers.
Make them redundant so they have to get a proper job
Do these people actually want to work?
It’s not as if railway workers are badly paid these days, and the Island Line must be on a knife edge financially.
It just seems so short-sighted.
IslandLine drivers are paid far worse than their mainline counterparts. Both roles require an EU Train Driving Licence, exactly the same qualification, but up to £40k less for working on the island compared with Fratton or Southampton depots.
I would sack the bloody lot of them, I’m sick of these lazy communist holding our country to ransom….We need another Maggie to put these lazy entitled communist back in their place….
The jealously is strong in this one, since childhood you’re dream was to be a train driver but you never fulfilled your dream yet.
Never say never , its such an easy job there is plenty of vacancies so get your application in .
What an absolute joke Island Line has become, all that money wasted on upgrading the line, digging the tunnel which flooded what a joke, and now you’re telling customers that you are sorry for not running the service due to striking again. Its an absolute disgrace, in fact Havenstreet steam railway would do a better job than you.
Why do our over paid train drivers jump every time the union tells them to jump.
Are they incapable of realising drivers are over paid, lazy and lucky to have a high paid job for little skill.
Sack the lot
Ah, another undereducated underachiever making silly suggestions.
Who do you think would take their place if they “sacked the lot” (even if it weren’t illegal to do so)?
That’s right. Nobody.
To be honest no one missed it when they went on strike the last time !!!!!
Waste of space…….
Ah I notice the train drivers are coming out in force on the mark downs !!!!
Lol … .
Laziness throughout the lot of striker’s …..
Vote with your feet and use buses …….
Shut the waste of space down …
I await the mark downs .hahaha…..
No, your mark downs are because you haven’t got a clue and therefore talk utter nonsense, don’t think otherwise.
Will anybody notice ?????
Total waste of all that money spent by the railway…..
Our island is turning into a disaster for travel!!!!!
Ferries Red Jets non floating bridge of cost a fortune……
Etc etc……
Leave then.
You won’t be missed.
Lol never used it never will ….
Bus walk etc …..
Buy Brig bum …
All those who say how easy it is , sack them they are just greedy etc etc. How about you applying for a job on the railway and you can have the same apparently easy life with a good wage !
Sorry… A bit off topic. It was the picture… I’m still reeling over the fact I have to pay 50p more for my ticket to subsidise motorists, so the world and his wife can drive up there for free, when I’ve just walked the damn thing. And I don’t get to walk the original promenade pier that I’ve just paid for and soak up the panoramic views, but rather placed in the middle with cars to look at on one side and trains on the other… Okay, rant over… 😉
Bring back the old London Tube Trains, they were
more nostalgic and more reliable.
