Both on and off the ice the support for the doomed rink was clear with a strong message resonating around the arena – save our rink. Those turning up to the event, organised by Islander Shauna Hall, included the Island’s MP Andrew Turner, Cllr Wayne Whittle and those who not only skate on the ice but turn up to support the many teams and groups that perform at Ryde.
As previously reported by Island Echo, Planet Ice is to close its doors at the end of March after owners pulled the plug on the venue, which hosts both local sports men and woman and tourists alike. Around 40 jobs are set to be lost unless an operator for the ice rink can be found soon.
The closure, which was only announced on Tuesday, has attracted a lot of support from both past and present users with over 9000 signatures now collected on an online petition, which can be found at https://www.change.org/p/isle-of-wight-save-our-rink.
