The Isle of Wight NHS Trust has launched an investigation after a patient was seriously injured following a fall from a window at St Mary’s Hospital on Thursday.
Police and paramedics rushed to the hospital site in Newport at just before 15:00 yesterday when an individual fell around 2 storeys in height from a 1st-floor window.
Island Echo is told that the patient has sustained significant injuries as a result of the incident, and may need to be transferred to Southampton General Hospital for further treatment.
It’s claimed that the window was locked and secure.
A spokesperson for the Trust has told Island Echo:
“A patient was injured falling from a secure first-floor window yesterday (Thursday 21 September).
“They are currently receiving treatment and a review of the circumstances leading up to the fall is ongoing.”

If the window was secure how did he fall? Lack of staff? Lack of appropriate staff?
The food is not that bad
Please do not blame the hospital. There is a thing called taking responsibility for yourself.
I wasn’t, sometimes it’s mental health or a reaction to medication or being in an inappropriate ward, which needs staff supervision!
i was there and you are pretty much spot on with your comments.the staff on the ward are lovely but were out of thier depth when dealing with this patient,he should not of been on this particular ward.
The blame goes to the tories for cutting and neglecting the NHS needs, to care for people in need of help. The hospital staff are of no blame, they can only work with the resources they have left, after the government have stolen the money that the public have paid in to the NHS service and are using it for their own recreation and corrupt NHS contracts to their crony mates. You only have to read the papers for proof of this happening on a daily basis, sadly there in no one with the balls to stop it happening, and all the losses have been written off which amount to billions.
A person falls, or more likely jumps, out of a window and it’s the fault of the Tories?
I know you’re trying, desperately, to peddle a particular political view, but it’s honestly counter-productive when you write nonsense like this.
Completely agree with your statement Caroline.
My apologies, for incorrect name Catherine.
You are obviously a tory voter who has been unaffected by the devastation they have caused, one part of it being neglect to the NHS staff who are run off their feet so bad they cannot cope with all the patients all the time. The torys ARE to blame with the decimation of the NHS and the braking of the whole country. This is the truth and is not nonsense. Come out into the real world of devastation and you might notice what damage has been caused.
You’re wasting your time.
Put a blue rosette on a dog poo and most Islanders would vote for it.
Ffs, if someone’s gonna throw themselves out a window, how u gonna stop that! Laughable comment…
How do you know who the ‘patient” is?
Mental health. Still, responsibility for oneself, yes? Or shall we wrap everyone in cotton wool? How many staff do you want? 1 to 1? Get a grip! Real life please…
Was it the Russians?
Again??
This happened a few years ago, and again from a supposedly “secure” window!
He was probably smoking a fag!
Lost for words, persons are in Hospital to get better not fall
out of windows.
Safety devices should be fitted on all windows to prevent such
accidents from happening.
Health and Safety at St Mary’s needs reviewing
immediately.
Senior management need to learn from past incidents.
Person clearly opened secure window and either fell or jumped, not hospital fault, the person made wrong choice.
Then it’s not a secure window
Agreed Rupert- common sense never prevails where you imagine it should. Intelligent people are not always savy
They shouldn’t have been able to open a secure window though should they!? That’s why they’re ‘secure’ it’s happened before so why let it happen again? No lessons learnt
Hope they are going to be ok.Somebody needs to be asked how did this happen ,the person needs to be compansated for what happened ,lots of money to them, staff need to be fined and sacked !!!
Why ?, they made choice to open window, it’s a hospital not a prison and staff are stretched to care for other patients as well, there aren’t endless supply of staff and money to staff can’t physically restrain people, that’s police job , It’s money grabbing compensation that’s taking away funds to help others. As yet we don’t know the whole story and I or others might be wrong,we just hope the person will be ok .
The staff are brilliant, dont talk shit
Rubbish! Nothing to do with hospital staff…. This person clearly wanted to end their life. When you’re that desperate, nothing will get in your way 🙁
How can you judge, were you there? This man was determined. The staff, security and all involved did their best for him. He was a very intimidating young man. Windows in this ward open a very small way, he must have broken the window to be able to jump. Please do not blame the staff they do a wonderful.
from a current patient on the ward at the time of the incident.
Thank you Max for a sensible, informative post. Also, I hope that you get well soon. Best wishes.
If one of them little keys was still in the lock then it is not a secure window as the option is there to open it ??
It’s secure until a patient decides for example to launch a chair, fire extinguisher or oxygen cylinder through the glass.
They may just have been desperate for some fresh air.
Depends what ward you’re on in my experience. One in particular the staff are atrocious, negligent and downright disgusting.
Thus doesn’t reflect all staff by a long way however a secure window should be just that to prevent this type of thing happening.
He clearly wasn’t being monitored and the window clearly was at fault as were the staff.
There are many lessons to be learned but they rarely are sadly. People literally turn up on wards in the late afternoon and are left in their rooms, it happens I’ve witnessed it.
It’s shocking, not all the time but it’s sub standard in many many ways
I was there shortly afterwards and asked an elderly couple who it was, they replied that it was our Kelly.
Why does everyone have an opinion about something they know nothing? Wait for the proceeding investigation, otherwise you are all in fairy tale territory.
