Southern Water’s decision to impose a hosepipe ban has been branded ‘shameless’ by the GMB Union, which says the company continues to leak more than 100million litres of water every day on average.
The criticism comes after Southern Water announced a Temporary Use Ban for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, following one of the driest springs in over a century and record-breaking temperatures in June.
The ban will come into force across the region at 09:00 on Monday (21st July).
Gary Carter, GMB National Officer, has slammed the water giant for failing to invest properly in its ageing infrastructure, saying:
“Southern Water loses more than 100 million litres of water through leaks every single day.
“GMB members at Southern work their socks off, but they’re hamstrung by crumbling infrastructure and non-existent investment.
“For Southern to now impose a hosepipe ban, while bills rocket, is shameless.”

not taking any notice of this shite.
Me neither.
No one in the island respects law and order or rules!
Vehicles constantly park on Double Yellow Lines and
Pavements – and no one does “fcuk” all about it!
We are living on an island with the softest rules in
the country.
1 Council Enforcement Officer spends most of the day
at drinking machines in shops, whilst he could be out and
about slapping parking tickets on inconsiderate
B’stards.
I agree, totally outrageous. My monthly water bill now costs a fair bit more than my monthly gas and electricity combined! I don’t water the garden, wash the car or fill a pond. Why should we pay through the nose for their incompetence?
I’d like to know what the people at the top are getting in the way of bonuses too.
Totally unfair.
“My monthly water bill now costs a fair bit more than my monthly gas and electricity combined! I don’t water the garden, wash the car or fill a pond”
so what the hell do you use that much water for, for your bill to be so high ??
I do water a very large garden,.. and occasionally wash my cars,.. and my water bill is less that 1/5th of my gas & electric…
Can’t stop me hooking up my hosepipe to my waterbutts so I can continue to grow our own food. There should be no need or reason for hosepipe bans in this day and age if they invested the money properly!!!!! No amenties should be privately owned
you can still use a hosepipe (from the tap) to water a veg patch !!
We have know one to blame but ourselves it’s called greed we never stop plundering the gifts we were given we could learn from the animal kingdom they made it last thousand ‘s of years
Honestly who else feels Southern water are taking the p… raising our bills by 47% ! & getting away with it ! While the shareholders are doing very well ! In Southampton a block of flats has been pumping raw sewage into the River Itchen for 30 years, honestly it’s criminal what they have done ! & they got the cheek to tell us what to do, get your own house in order first damn robbers & getting away with it !!!!!!!
