PHOTO GALLERY: Hundreds of Islanders have witnessed HMS Queen Elizabeth enter her home port of Portsmouth for the very first time this morning (Wednesday).
The 66,000 tonne aircraft carrier made her way up the Eastern Solent from the Nab Tower at 05:50 and entered through the harbour entrance at Portsmouth at 07:10. The grand arrival was marked with a fly past by Merlin and Wildcat helicopters, as well as Hawk jets.
The brand new carrier is set to serve Queen and Country for the next 50 years and therefore will be a regular visitor to the Solent for a whole generation.
Today’s historic moment also saw thousands of people gathered on the other side of the Solent in and around Portsmouth and Southsea.
