As the country deals with the coronavirus pandemic, it has been confirmed that Bird Flu is back and spreading across the country leading to an Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) being declared tonight (Wednesday).
To mitigate the risk of the H5N8 avian flu disease spreading, the UK’s Chief Veterinary Officer Christine Middlemiss has implemented the AIPZ across the whole of England, Wales and Scotland – including the Isle of Wight.
This means it is a legal requirement for all bird keepers to follow strict biosecurity measures.
Keepers with more than 500 birds will need to restrict access for non-essential people on their sites, workers will need to change clothing and footwear before entering bird enclosures and site vehicles will need to be cleaned and disinfected regularly.
Meanwhile, backyard owners with smaller numbers of poultry including chickens, ducks and geese are to strengthen their biosecurity measures in order to prevent further outbreaks of avian influenza in the UK.
Public Health England (PHE) advises that the risk to public health from the virus is very low and the Food Standards Agency advises that avian influenzas pose a very low food safety risk for UK consumers. Properly cooked poultry and poultry products, including eggs, are safe to eat.
The introduction of the AIPZ comes after 2 separate, unrelated cases in kept poultry and birds confirmed in England last week and a third case of H5N8 avian flu in captive birds was confirmed today at a broiler breeder farm in Herefordshire. The disease has also been identified as close to home as Dorset.
Thousands of birds have already been culled in a bid to control the situation.
UK Chief Veterinary Officer Christine Middlemiss has said:
“I have today declared a national Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) legislating for actions all bird keepers must take to help prevent the disease spreading to more poultry and other domestic birds.
“Public Health England has confirmed that the risk to public health is very low and the Food Standards Agency advises that bird flu poses a very low food safety risk for UK consumers.
“Whether you keep just a few birds or thousands, you are now legally required to meet enhanced biosecurity requirements and this is in your interests to do, to protect your birds from this highly infectious disease.
The prevention zone means bird keepers across the country must:
- Ensure the areas where birds are kept are unattractive to wild birds, for example by netting ponds, and by removing wild bird food sources;
- Feed and water your birds in enclosed areas to discourage wild birds;
- Minimise movement in and out of bird enclosures;
- Clean and disinfect footwear and keep areas where birds live clean and tidy;
- Reduce any existing contamination by cleansing and disinfecting concrete areas, and fencing off wet or boggy areas.
The prevention zone will be in place until further notice.
Poultry keepers and members of the public should report dead wild birds to the Defra helpline on 03459 33 55 77 and keepers should report suspicion of disease to APHA on 03000 200 301. Keepers should familiarise themselves with our avian flu advice.

Stop paying for torture and enslavement of innocent sentient beings.. Go Vegan….
There is lots of footage online on youtube too Where you can see thanks to brave activist What is happening to these animals which meat and diary and eggs industry etc dont want you to see.. For human greed no need They are viciously exploited.. Leave them be….
No thanks I like eating chicken to much but please don’t come here trying to preach we simply do not care !!
Yes I like chicken hate veg and what about all the farmers spraying all the crops
You do know the fastest way to get somebody to not do something is to keep going on about it don’t you?
Ye I won’t stop talking about animal cruelty injustice because non vegans don’t want to unacknowledge it.. I know non vegans wants us to respect their animal eating habits but that’s not happening.. You don’t respect animals….
I did try posting a link to some footage on you tube, which was removed twice, but it seems it is ok to post a link to advertising for a product for use on dead chickens.
This is very bad news, what’s next foot and mouth ?
When are people going to realise that all these nasties are happening because of the disgusting way we treat animals? It’s no coincidence that these viruses are spread due the unnatural conditions animals are kept in. Humans are busy feeling sorry for themselves because of the situation we’re now in, forgetting that it is in fact humans that have caused it by their greed
Non vegans only care about themselves unfortunately with their stereotyping views thinking of their supremacy and any excuse really to satisfy their greeds no needs….
vegans only care about themselves unfortunately with their stereotyping views thinking of their supremacy and any excuse really to satisfy their greeds no needs
I care about innocent sentient beings vulnerable to oppressors like yourself….
if they are all sentient, then why aren’t the lions/tigers etc all having tree hugging clubs about not eating gazelles.
why are the hyena’s still chasing down, cornering and mauling to death a scared and frightened creature – are all the other creatures family mourning its loss
why are the alligators hiding under the water and then grabbing the zebra as they drink from the waters edge and murdering them by drowning.
why haven’t the giraffes organised a protest group and demanding that the lions stop eating meat.
everything eats everything – including you vystopia – you eat bugs and insect larvae in your food everyday without knowing it and what about the endless suffering you create to insects and bacteria by using bleach and sprays.
what about the harm done to creatures homes by house building.
Left wing sentiments as well,. I don’t see any communist dictatorships being vegan
Nurse!
The start of the 10 plagues.
These hens definitely had Corona…
Oh what a surprise, who would have thought!? Keep up the fear level! Well done chaps.
….or…perhaps let people know that bird flu cases are on the up so people can protect their birds along with taking precautions to prevent cross species transmission…..?
So, i’m not to feed the birds? is that what you’re saying?
I’m with you on this. Stopping so many diseases, preventing cruelty to animals, saving the environment, stopping world hunger – what’s not to like about all that?
Down vote all you like meat eaters. Doesn’t make us wrong.
Good reason for us all to stay locked down for ever. Flu is a killer you know on a par with Covid.
That is wrong. Please don’t spread miss information.
Read what the WHO have to say on the matter and you will see I’m right.
https://www.who.int/bulletin/online_first/BLT.20.265892.pdf
tony – that link lost me on page one at…
I estimated the infection fatality rate for each study by dividing the number of COVID-19 deaths by the number of people estimated to be infected in each region
in otherwords, a lot of finger in the air guess work by the author.
The WHO is a good place to start if you want the best estimates related to pandemics.
His conclusion was an IFR of 0.2% which compares to the IFR from flu of 0.1%
Why would be willing to accept the deaths from flu without a lockdown?
Wow echo! I state a fact, like agenda 2030 on the government’s website, yet you still stop my post. I’m done here, as free speech just died here on the echo.
See you tomorrow.
You can be well fed from plants agriculture.!
Yes vystopia, but plants need fields to grow, and bringing in those who out breed their own lands then do the same here with vigour, take green spaces.
This creates more mouths to feed BUT with less land to provide such unless intensive farming or more chemicals increase yield, but ONE DAY the mouths will out eat the lands production.
Surely better to have less people here and a better life for all?
I can’t do nothing about that as you state something like ” let’s have less people in England and that’s when I care”.? What..?? Supermarkets have growing more and more plant based products.. Its all about consumers what they pay for and rather support not about as you suggest have less people here.. That won’t make difference.. People need to realise and care only then its gonna change.. Ignorance is not a bliss….
More houses = less ‘growing land but = more mouths to feed. THAT is the problem.
If they stop breeding animals massively forcefully artificially for profit and human greed all that land instead of torture farming can be used for plants farming so stop making excuses for animal exploitation….
no such thing as a true vegan
do you have a smart phone – it has a battery – all batteries have gelatin in them – derived from animal products.
hypocrites.
As I stated anything non vegans says to justify them being non vegans..
I never heard about gelatin in battery I don’t know about that.. But try minimise animal suffering.. Don’t eat them.. Don’t wear them.. Buy cruelty free vegan cosmetics cleaning products.. Sustainable palm oil.. Don’t pay for cruel entertainment like horse races horse riding zoos circuses with animals etc.. World is not perfect but humans shouldn’t make excuses for exploiting innocent sentient beings….
They are food it’s that simple I’ll never change you lot do what you want and us non vegans do what we want simple, it’s the food chain it’s how it’s always been…annoys me when people like this try and preach if you want to do that go to church lol
Veganism is not religion its simple idea to leave animals be and not to exploit them and because of people like you world is horrid coz of people who just think are entitled to exploit animals coz of your selfish reasons….
In nature almost everything eats everything else – nothing is wasted – try telling lions and tigers to be kind to the gazelles. Try telling killer whales not to throw the seals around before eating a bit of them and then leaving them to die.Tell the birds of prey to stop stealing baby mice etc from its parents.
how many vegans use bleach and insect sprays, how many vegans are happy to see natural habitats destroyed, and deforestation taking place just so they can have more plant food grown.
Lions etc as you mentioning some animals are obligated carnivores.. Humans are not.. Stop comparing yourself with lions.. Lions also don’t put zebras to factories and making farms.. Your arguments is invalid.. You should know better but you don’t want to.. You are part of the problem part of the cruelty humans inflict on animals….
yep humans are obligated to eat the food that they need – it is well documented that some humans cannot stay healthy on a meat free diet.
you are like all vegans – focused on the food aspect, yet you never seem to bothered about the by products of animals used in every day items.- are you using a device with an LCD screen to watch tv/use your computer or phone – most of them have cholesterol taken from animals in the liquid crystals in the screen.
you do realise that most toothpastes have glycerin in them – derived from animal fats.
you do realise that fabric softener has dimethyl ammonium chloride in them – essentially animal fats.
you do realise that white and brown sugar have bone char from animals used in the processing to make them white – brown sugar has molasess added to make it brown.
did you know…The majority of tattoo ink uses a whole host of animal products, including animal fat, bone char, gelatin and shellac – which is taken from the female lac bug.
just a few more examples
YES I KNEW ABOUT THAT.! I buy vegan sugar which says ‘suitable for Vegans’ and I buy Vegan Cruelty Free Cosmetics even toothpaste the same cleaning products.. I look closely at what i buy and use and i research stuff..
For non vegan you research lots of stuff about what is not vegan and what animals you compare yourself with yet you decide to stay ‘in the darkness’….
get off your pc/phone dsytopian – there are animal products in them.
Many raw materials, used in cosmetics, were tested on animals years ago when they were first introduced. A cosmetic manufacturer might only use those raw materials and base their “cruelty-free” claims on the fact that the materials or products are not “currently” tested on animals.
Bottom Line: Humans are naturally omnivores and function best eating a combination of animals and plants. This is reflected in the anatomy of our digestive system.
Vegans loving this. The ugly truth is that humans are omnivores. We are able to eat anything and do. It is part of the reason of our successes as a spices. Although I do agree with the sentiment that our animal based food should be farmed without suffering.
Humans made themselves to be omnivores.. Go try to chase rabbit and just eat it raw like true obligated carnivore like some animals are.. NOT Humans.. You just use fork and knife to eat dead body parts which once been sentient being not wanting to die for your breakfast lunch dinner.. In this age you don’t need to hunt.. You go to supermarket and disconnected you pay for dead body parts when instead you could buy cruelty free products which by the way are also better for your health and I’m not missing B12 either as many seems to state.. it would be win win.. Yet most people choose cruelty staying so ignorant and just don’t care…. We all could thrive on vegan food….
we do not need to eat it raw- we evolved to harness the power of fire and heat. If a lion could knock up a BBQ unit, it probably would – look far enough back and you will see that humans did eat it raw and it died whilst being eaten.
humans use their teeth to eat meat, just the same as the lion does – no difference.
Oh sniff your friend ass to say hi as lions do.. Your tiny teeny teeth.. Educate yourself better.. Even some strong biggest herbivores got sharp big teeth like hippo gorilla etc if you want to compare so much….
typical lefty insults when you are losing the argument vystopia –
fact is, in nature everything gets eaten by something else, sooner or later and that includes you.
have a look at the underwater world – ever watched the feeding frenzy on a large bait ball of small schooling fish
by all predators, which includes other fish, birds and then humans as well, when they go out fishing also.
didn’t notice any vegan fish, looking down its nose at the predators, whilst munching seaweed.
Yes I am insulted by your idio*ism by your absolut ignorance and non caring.. All you do is just comparing other animals blah blah.. If you can choose NO cruelty wtf would you choose cruelty.. Says a lot about person….
It isn’t just that we can eat anything but that we have to eat everything, it’s what we evolved to do. Also veganism is a very unhealthy lifestyle, which can store up trouble in years to come. Have a pork chop and a pint of Guiness and feel better for it!
Maybe my neighbours will finally get rid of their cockerels, We’re ready for less stress, an ability to enjoy our garden and a roast chicken Sunday lunch!
( yes we have complained to our ‘effective’ council, and yes, our neighbours did move in after us, and yes we’ve tried to sell!)
One day, the world will run out of farmed meat. But, never mind, the carnivores can then eat all the vegans.
Vegans opinions are bordering the lines of radicalisation from what I’m reading. You don’t want to eat meat or anything produced by animals fine… just make sure you’re not wearing anything made from animals either. Leave meat eaters etc to do what they want to do.
You don’t give a choice to your victims — innocent sentient beings who don’t want to be kept for your food and enslaved.. Who would want to be..
They feel pain..terror..sadness.. happiness.. they don’t wont to be tore from their families..
Yet you pay for it and get offended if vegans challenge your conscience..
This is about sentient beings we talking so I don’t feel like preaching I feel is necessary to talk about it.. Very necessary….
go and talk to the fish and other sea creatures about eating each other and the poor families left behind to fend for theirselves.
you are actually wetter than the fish are.
maybe you can get the fish to have a focus group on “seaweed – the benefits outweigh eating the guppy”
All this talk of chicken is making me fancy a bargain bucket….
