Heavy goods vehicles are facing even longer diversions due to the closure of Elenors Grove, as Island Roads is to close the main road through Brading, forcing large vehicles through the villages of Bembridge and St Helens.
The works at Elenor’s Grove between Fishbourne and Ryde will soon get underway and are expected to last 3 months, with a one-way closure forcing traffic heading into Ryde – including HGVs – onto a signed diversion route via Arreton, Lake, Sandown and Brading.
However, from 2nd February, New Road in Brading will be closed for up to 4 weeks, as previously reported by Island Echo. The closure will remove this vital link and forcing HGVs onto an extended route via Bembridge and St Helens to access Ryde.
This change is likely to bring heavier traffic through both villages, just days after the reopening of Embankment Road between the two, which had itself caused lengthy disruption for several weeks.
One firm has warned that up to 15 of its own articulated lorries will have to pass through the villages each and every day, following a diversion that is over 20 miles from the Fishbourne ferry.
Island Roads has confirmed that New Road will be closed 24 hours a day for safety, with no vehicular access allowed. The resurfacing work comes despite the road already having been resurfaced under the PFI contract – but has since deteriorated and now requires complete reconstruction.
Island Echo contacted Island Roads back in October to flag whether or not the New Road closure would go ahead, in light of the Southern Water works near Quarr. Concerns were raised about the very lengthy diversion and the impact on East Wight villages. No response has been received.
Meanwhile, from today (Monday), further travel disruption is also expected in the Newport area, with the return of a one-way system at Horsebridge Hill for 3 months – adding to what is likely to be a challenging few weeks for Isle of Wight road users.
Omg it’s impossible this is going to get worse it’s a complete nightmare especially as now we are so overcrowded with Craptiva concreting over the Island our poor little roads were not designed for 15 HGV’s a day surely the road will deteriorate again after this !!!!

Island Roads still don’t know how to repair a pothole
yet alone carry our larger repairs.
The roads were in a better state before Island Roads
entered the scene.
Biggest waste of money ever seen on the island,
they employ too many shirkers on high rates of pay
and that’s only the operatives, not to mention
management.
Not with Island Roads involved, they will probably get the wrong road or fill up holes with sandbags
They prefer watching.
Island roads have to close two busymain thoroughfares at a time. Sounds about right for them . The congestion on the diversion routes will be manic .
Accidents waiting to happen and all because of shoddy workmanship in the first place .
and to top it off they closed havenstreet to through traffic which led to a very lengthy delay as in 30 mins to get from Combly Rd to Lynbottom.
Island roads definitely know how to screw up our roads with using joined up thinking

If island road team can put there phones away for a a bit they may get it done quicker, I passed some the other day they all had there phones out vaping and smoking,the idle lot
