Motorists are set to face several weeks of disruption as Island Roads will be closing the main road through Brading for carriageway reconstruction works, starting on 2nd February.
The works, which are expected to last up to 20 working days until 27th February, will see full 24-hour closures in place between Marshcombe Shute and The Bull Ring, although works will only actually be taking place between 07:00 and 18:00 on weekdays.
Despite the road already having been resurfaced under the Highways PFI contract, its current condition has been deemed inadequate and is now being completely redone.
This closure is likely to have a significant impact on motorists across the Isle of Wight, particularly as New Road is a key part of the diversion route for the forthcoming works on Elenor’s Grove between Fishbourne and Ryde. It is also the main road connecting the towns of Ryde and Sandown.
To add misery to motorists, there is a provision in place to close The Mall in Brading if there is evidence of it being used as a rat-run to avoid the New Road closure.
Island Roads has warned that no on-street parking will be allowed in the affected areas and vehicles left on site may be removed. Residents are being asked to move their vehicles before the works begin to avoid disruption.
Meanwhile, from Monday, further travel disruption is also expected in the Newport area, with the return of a one-way system at Horsebridge Hill for 3 months – adding to what is likely to be a challenging few weeks for Isle of Wight road users.

Whoever places the signs is a numpty,
so confusing.
One has to ask the question, is there anyone with overall responsibility for the coordination, ie complete lack of, these roadworks. If they are the result of emergency work eg a gas leak then we could understand it but all the work appears to be pre-planned maintenance. If this is the case then coordination should not be difficult.
That would be IWCC they have a statutory obligation to coordinate works and minimise disruption.
Although they always claim (incorrectly) claim they have passed that obligation on to Island roads.
Unfortunately there seems to be no oversight and previous complaints to the transport minister have referred me back to the council who are hardly going to tell themselves off.
Something our new MPs can help with perhaps?
Describing motorist’s as rats, seems a bit strong. Particularly from a company that by there own admission has previously fixed Brading road, unsatisfactorily
If island roads had done their job properly initially and used decent road laying products like abroad and did the whole road it would not have to be done again . The cheap crap put on our roads to potentially save money doesn’t last , tax payers money wasted yet again.

Can we have a statement from the responsible IWCC councillor explaining why they have not ensured that disruption was minimised and why they failed to coordinate works?
All these urgent resurfacing works by Island Roads and Southern Water repairs, yet everything stops on Saturday and Sunday. That’s efficiency for ya.
