UPDATED: The National Police Air Service helicopter has been involved in an aerial search of Newport this morning (Thursday) following a crash involving an Audi on St George’s Way.
At shortly before midnight the Police chopper was called in to assist ground units in the search for the occupant(s) of a silver Audi S3, who are thought to have fled from the scene of a crash in which the vehicle collided into fencing at the side of the carriageway.
Island Echo believes the vehicle was being pursued by Police at the time of the incident. Witnesses have described seeing a Police response vehicle on the verge of the road beside the crashed Audi, however it does not appear to have been involved in any collision.
Dog units on the ground have conducted a search of the cycle path between Shide and Blackwater, however it is currently unknown if the occupant or occupants of the vehicle have been detained.
The sports Audi, alongside a Renault Megane convertible, are being recovered from the scene.
UPDATE @ 01:10 – Police have now left the scene and the NPAS helicopter from Bournemouth has returned to base.
UPDATE @ 01:50 – It has been confirmed that one person has been detained following the search, which centered on the Shide area.
The individual has been detained by ground crews and taken to Newport Police Station for questioning.
