Newport Rowing Club enjoyed a strong showing at a challenging 5km head race in Southampton, with multiple crews delivering impressive performances across their respective categories.
The twisting Southampton course tested crews across the board, but the Junior-Senior open crew of Boris Hare, Matt Swiss, Jake Garner and Jude Williams, coxed by Mariana Hare, rose to the occasion. They not only won their section but also recorded the fastest time of the day across all crews, finishing in 16:00.
In the Women’s Novice category, Grace Garner, Julia Coulson, Camy Korkis and Helen Hopper, coxed by Finn Gorbutt, secured an impressive 2nd place. Competing in his first head race as cox, Gorbutt helped guide the crew to a time of 20:42, just 29 seconds behind the winning Southampton crew in a fleet of 12.
The Junior Open crew of Ed Hopper, Chris Clarke, Huseyin Yolclu and Riv Szawiel, with Fiona Brookes as cox, also put in a determined effort, finishing 10th in their section.
Attention now turns to the Isle of Wight club’s home regatta on the River Medina, which will open the Hants and Dorset season on Saturday 2nd May and Sunday 3rd May.
