A Brighstone man who dropped his pants and flashed a female police officer who was trying to detain him is to be sentenced next month.
Jeffrey Bedford, 36, of Main Road in Brighstone pleaded guilty to criminal damage and indecent exposure when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court today (Tuesday).
Prosecuting, Ann Smout told the court that at around 22:00 on Sunday (30th July), Bedford’s mother heard him shouting and screaming at his home address.
She attempted to speak to Bedford, to find out what was wrong, to which he simply told her to ‘go away’. Shortly after Bedford’s mother heard banging of metal outside.
Bedford then appeared at the patio door, banging on the glass repeatedly. It was then that the Police were called.
After the noise stopped, Bedford’s mother went outside to see her car had been damaged; the wing mirror smashed, windows smashed and several dents in the doors.
Police arrived and attempted to detain Bedford – who by now had locked himself in his home – but the 36-year-old was refusing to let officers in.
Officers managed to gain entry to the premises and were met with the sight of Bedford standing there in his T-shirt and boxer shorts. Despite the best efforts of those at the scene to calm down a clearly agitated Bedford, he proceeded to drop his underwear and flash his penis, stating to the female officer detaining him “do you want some?”.
Bedford’s underpants were pulled up before he managed to drop them again, repeating the lewd gesture.
In Police interview Bedford stated that he had no recollection of the events of that evening, according to defence solicitor Barry Arnett. Mr Arnett added that Bedford’s mental health had deteriorated after he was released from prison back in 2020.
Magistrates ordered that the case be adjourned until 1st September to allow a pre-sentence report to be compiled.
Bedford has been granted conditional bail until that time.
