Nearly 60 community-minded volunteers from across Sandown Bay grabbed their litter picks and rolled up their sleeves as part of the first-ever Great Bay Wide Litter Pick last weekend (Saturday 22nd March)
The event was led by Ben Holbrook of Building The Bay, the area place plan steering group. It was part of The Great British Spring Clean, a national initiative by Keep Britain Tidy and saw Sandown & Shanklin Green Town Volunteers and members of the public litter pick from Yaverland to Shanklin Old Village.
In just two and a half hours the plucky volunteers collected 45 bags of litter from sand dunes, paths, hedges and verges across The Bay.
Ben said:
“It was really heart-warming to have such a fantastic turnout of amazing volunteers at the first time of organising a Bay wide event like this and we thank each and every one who came along”
“We would all prefer not to be doing this on a Saturday morning but while council budgets are being cut and thoughtless individuals continue to think it’s ok to discard of rubbish wherever they like – if we all pick up the odd bit of litter and dispose of it correctly, The Bay and The Island will be a cleaner and nicer place for all.”
After the success of the first event, it is hoped that The Bay Wide Litter Pick might become a more regular event.
The litter pick finished at Lake Cliff Gardens and the weary volunteers were treated to cakes and refreshments, kindly donated by Tesco Ryde. The litter collected as part of the event was kindly disposed of by Biffa Waste Services – Isle Of Wight and we thank them for their support.

Council tax discount for their effort.
Sad that we have such litter louts on the Island.
What is the breakdown of all that litter, is it mostly food packaging?
if it is, it is probably not from the weekly shop as that gets into bins, it’s more than likely fast food and drink packaging, some from drive through outlets.
with modern technology every package that is handed out to the driver of the drive through could have the car registration printed on it and therefore become traceable.
Majority of the uneducated Numpty’s who
carry out such acts don’t display their
registration plates.
They put them on the dashboard in the vehicle
window so no one can see their no.
