A major business is proposing to become more eco-friendly at its Isle of Wight base — by installing a solar farm.
On land owned by GKN Aerospace Services, in Whippingham, the company is hoping to install roughly 3,432 solar panels.
Planning documents submitted to the Isle of Wight Council, by agents BCM, say it is the aerospace company’s intention to use the renewable energy generated to offset energy demands.
Energy not needed by GKN could go to the local electrical distribution network.
The field of fallow grass is next to the cricket ground on Beatrice Avenue and behind the Whippingham Technology Park.
It is proposed a wildflower mix would be sown under the ground-mounted panels.
The solar panels would cover 5,885m² of ground and stand between 2.7m and 3m tall. It could take between 4 and 6 months to construct.
An electric substation, 8ft tall fence, and access track are also proposed to be built into the site. There is no set end date for the site but BCM say the operational period of the panels is typically 40 years and at the end of that time the land would be restored to grassland.
You can view the plans, 23/00630/FUL, on the council’s planning register. Comments can be submitted until 5th June.

How is this being eco friendly? If this is farmland it should be used for producing food to help prevent food having to be imported.
Err … because it is saving the environment from carbon emissions due to power usage and also reducing methane emissions from livestock, as well providing an environment for wildlife. People should really grow more of their own food to reduce reliance on imports. You can produce so much from even the smallest of gardens. Saves you a small fortune.
Why don’t you save your garden from these dangerous CO2 emissions and cover it completely in biodegradable ‘eco’ plastic so that none of the nasty gas can pollute your greenery – oh hang on a minute it is actually the lifeblood of all plants on the planet and also the gas everyone exhales every minute of every hour of every day – they always said that one day they’d tax the air we breathe but the globalist megalomaniacs have gone one better and convinced you it’s a deadly threat instead
There are acres of good green land, going to waste in Ryde when Pennyfeathers builds 500 houses on it… green to cement… instead of crops, which would help support community needs, concrete.. and more feral’s..
Why after 40 years will the panels be removed and the land returned to grass ? Is that because by then the WEF net zero plans will have intentionally wrecked the nation and driven us back into planned medieval peasanthood so electricity(unpredictably variable and unreliable as these panels will be) is no longer necessary ?
Yes that must be the reason. Now remember to keep taking your tablets dear. The aliens have gone away again so you are totally safe.
pass me some mushrooms…
The WEF are destroying our lives and many people have not even heard of them.
Very worrying.
Just keep taking the tablets Bob. It is all a load of old nonsense peddled by YouTube loonies. The WEF members want a better world for everyone.
