needlesUp to 100 walkers battled through pouring rain and foggy conditions overnight to walk from Bembridge to The Needles, all in the name of charity. 

The annual Challenge The Wight event, organised by Challenge & Adventure, saw walkers leave Bembridge at 22:00 last night making their way through the Island’s countryside to Carisbrooke and on-wards to The Needles, covering over 26 miles in the dark.

The unfavorable conditions meant a slight diversion in the West Wight to avoid Tennyson Down, with the weather becoming too windy and dangerous for walkers. The epic challenge ended at The Needles Landmark Attraction with the first walkers crossing the line at around 06:00, although keen runners completed the hike even quicker.

challengethewighthsswightsarWightSAR, the Island’s volunteer search and rescue team, supported the event by providing safety cover whilst HSS Hire provided lighting, power and traffic management.

Challenge & Adventure is a registered charity, set up in 1992 to help disadvantaged and challenging young people on the Isle of Wight. The charity works with young people aged 12 to 19 and uses adventurous and challenging outdoor activities alongside tailored support to help raise their confidence, self esteem and aspirations.
