A technical issue has led to the cancellation of at least 4 sailings on Red Funnel’s East Cowes-Southampton vehicle ferry service today (Friday).
Those crossing the Solent – on arguably the busiest day of the week – are facing significant disruption as a result of a technical issue with Red Eagle’s aft main engine.
Earlier on, the 07:00 from Southampton and the 08:30 from East Cowes were pulled, but now it has been announced that the 10:00 from Southampton and the 11:30 from East Cowes have also been cancelled.
The 12:30 and 13:30 sailings from East Cowes are likely to be delayed by 60 mins due to the earlier cancellations, Red Funnel says.
Further cancellations throughout the day haven’t been ruled out.
UPDATE @ 11:17 – Red Funnel now says that the 13:30 from East Cowes to Southampton is delayed by up to 2 hours.
The 13:00 from Southampton and the 14:30 from East Cowes have now been cancelled, alongside the 16:00 from Southampton and the 17:30 from East Cowes. That takes the total number of cancellations to 8.
Red Funnel apologises for any inconvenience to your journey.

Wouldn’t be that ferries are full enough each trip, so saving money on fuel? Don’t blame them, but just be honest! We are all fed up being lied to continuously!
Red Eagle spent most last winter under repair in a shipyard at Falmouth. Despite that, the vessel has had further trouble on and off ever since eventually returning to service. She has broken down yet again causing delays of up to two hours on the other two ferries.
This has nothing to do with a lack of business.

So problems with Wightlink due to a missing essential member of staff (again) and now more trouble with Red Funnel…..both companies holding us to ransom with diabolical prices and both totally unreliable
Due to having only 2 “”incompetent”” Ferry Companies on the
Island, our freedom is at their mercy.
The way it is going soon we will be stranded on the Island
