The main route between Newport and Ryde has been closed this morning (Wednesday) as a result of excessive flooding at Wootton Bridge, where the creek has burst its banks.
Island Roads – at the request of Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary – has closed Kite Hill resulting in the main route between Newport and Ryde being severed.
Due to excessive flooding on other routes used to get between the Island’s 2 biggest towns, including in Havenstreet and on Briddlesford Road, most traffic is using The Downs resulting in lengthy traffic delays.
Vehicles have tried to drive through the flooding outside The Sloop but almost all have become stuck, including the occupant of a Vauxhall Astra van who had to jump from the seat of the stricken vehicle into a Warburtons Lorry that was wading through the deep water.
Nearly 70mm of rainfall overnight has caused significant flooding across the Island including in Binstead, Carisbrooke, Newport, Hunnyhill and East Cowes.
UPDATE @ 12:50 – Island Roads say they are preparing to re-open Kite Hill/Wootton Bridge as a result of flood water easing.

Several years ago on Xmas eve it was like this. No hysteria due to the fact is was at 5.30am. The poor old sloop had a massive clean up to prepare for Xmas day dinners.
I think that Vauxhall van driver on Wootton Bridge thought for a minute he was in a speedboat. Hope his car is ok 😉
Which one? xD
Well a stupid twit went past while I was slowly going through large flood this morning nearly drowned my van bloody Land Rover driver absolute idiot
What these idiots don’t realise is the damage and risk they create with the wave they generate but its im all right Jack
What a mental day
Thanks for the video IE.
Wow, someone should build a bridge.
Well they did, but the river saw it and said, “Hold my beer!” XD
The reports are flooding in
van ruined… good ol popo on it then this morning…
hope the slop inn got flooded they will have to wash there kitchen floor now
Lakeside park hotel..such a shame owners are so lovely people
IOW Council: What we need here is a floating bridge, they work so well.
‘Scuse me, CP got that wrong. MOST cars are getting through, not stuck!!!. There’s only a couple that broke down !
What is needed is the sluice gate opening to let the lake water out. Why han’s someone done that? Simple, then the lake would empty faster and the flood would not be there….Tide level is way lower than the lake…
and that will do what keep the water in the water was off the land not the sea
No it would let more flow under bridge thus reducing hight the other side and then not over road as in video. Too many members of public calling on Island Roads for non urgent means less staff around, why didn’t residents etc open the gates more?.
Might help if they dredged the lake. Its full of silt it’s not actually that deep.
It wasn’t sluice gates holding the water back, it was the high spring tide stopping the water from being able to get out which was why as soon as the tide started dropping the water level in the mill pond started dropping as well.
I was like “wow, that driver is quite ballsy to go through that water…” and that’s when car gave up 😀
well he is a island driver
Always makes me laugh that people even attempt their journey when they know full well that an area is flooded and not passable. Why even leave to make the trip? Aren’t warnings there for a reason, people are either stupid or ignorant.
I could find no warnings that it was flooded till I sat in the queue there, and had to turn back. There certainly wasn’t anything on the “breaking news” bit here. I had an important appointment.
Astra van driver was a total knob, driving into it at that speed!
What a nob driving like that in to water the the end of that engine lol why would you drive though salt water with your car
