A flood alert is in force for the Eastern Yar this morning (Tuesday) as a result of torrential rainfall over the past 24 hours.
The water level in the Eastern Yar is said to be high and rising with more than half a month’s rain – around 27mm – recorded at Wroxall on Monday. It’s known that elsewhere on the Island up to 52mm was recorded yesterday alone, with Ryde, Brighstone and Freshwater experiencing the heaviest downpours.
Although the river is towards the top of the river bank at Alverstone, property flooding is not expected. That said, some field flooding may occur at Langbridge.
At Sandown, the river will continue to rise until 10:00 this morning at which point it might just be high enough to cause some minor impact flooding to Golf Links Road.
With some showers still expected today Islanders should anticipate the river to be higher than normal.
The weather is improving as the week goes on – just in time for coronavirus restrictions to be unlocked and the school summer holidays to begin.
Oh god that is more rain down the valley, and coming via the tributary to my property and my neighbours, then on through to the culvert, which at the moment is blocked full of mud and silt, and South western Railway you should be ashamed of yourselves, its your responsibility as a “riperian” owner of the river bank to keep it clean of mud, silt and anything that is in it, like myself and my neighbours have to do. Turn one of your big machines round and dig it out, it wouldn’t take long and then the water wouldn’t rise fast and flood our properties. As the railway is closed its the perfect opportunity to do something about it.
And how long a delay to the reopening of the cyclepath will Southern Water claim as a result?
Yet thousands more houses will be built running water into brooks as the land is covered in homes, tarmac and concrete.
IF the developers had to pay to sort out the infrastrucure issues their ‘gain’ creates for others to pay for, then they would be less keen to destory this Island.
