The troubled Cowes Floating Bridge will remain out of action until at least Tuesday 4th August, the Isle of Wight Council has confirmed.
Floating Bridge No.6 is once again in the spotlight due to the prolonged suspension of service between East Cowes and West Cowes this month – the latest instance in a long-running saga of problems.
It was initially planned that the Floating Bridge would be suspended for 10 days from Tuesday 14th July. However, the vessel failed testing and therefore did not return to service on 24th July as planned.
The Isle of Wight Council subsequently said that the cross-Medina service would resume on Tuesday (28th July) but on Monday afternoon confirmed a change of plan.
Now, officials have said that the Floating Bridge will remain out of service until at least 4th August – meaning the suspension of service has been prolonged from 10 days to over 21 days.
A launch service for foot passengers will continue to operate from 05:00-23:00 daily (06:30-23:00 Sundays).

Unimaginable failure!
If heads don’t roll it stinks of cover a cover up
Chocolate fire gaurd more usable.
A complete tragedy.
Thats unusual!
What a waste of money!!! Why can’t the council say enough is enough and scrap the vessel as it seems to spend more time being repaired. The old ferry worked fine for years until someone thought we needed a new one!! Oh how Wrong they are. Makes you wonder IF they council know what they are doing!!!
Isn’t it about time we had a bridge at the bottom of Stag lane, surely that would be better for cars etc and just have a boat permanently in Cowes for foot traffic
I’m not a fan of the boat, especially if it is choppy. Also it is difficult for parents with babies/toddlers to use.
Please can we have news, like when it is actually operating and not in its usual state. Thanks.
It’s strange… In any other walk of life, such failure would result in immediate dismissal. Yet the council just say “Everything is working fine”, ignore the facts and carry on in their usual inept, corrupt way. In fact they’ll probably vote themselves pay rises and congratulate themselves (as Stewart has done recently) on a job well done.
But what do you expect with a totally corrupt MP who knows he will get re-elected by the right-wingers of the Island no matter what? Corruptness and ineptitude filter down. And while the vast majority of voting Islanders will vote for whoever wears a blue rosette it’s not going to change any time soon.
The Tory way is to NEVER admit you’re wrong, or that something has not worked. It’s seen as weakness. Whereas in the real working world, most of us know that admitting you are wrong is a sign of strength and self-awareness, and how you learn and evolve. They’ll never back down. They’ll never learn. They’ll never evolve.
Hey-ho.
We need a bridge there , I can c y the council is skint forever spending a small fortune on it all the time , oh wait our concil tax pays for it
“Come on seldom seen” in case you have missed your constituents mirth/indignation.. Total cock up of a council’s “order”!! Instead of poking your nose into what would be a three day tourist boost for a beleaguered Island. Sort out something which concerns those you supposedly represent”diamond shape rock in The Solent “seldom see. That’s your constituency!!!
What a sad joke this is, Come on Council sort this out once and for all, you know it don’t work, get back to the makers and get them to refund the money and get a replacement, enough is enough!
Will this mess up the reliability figures, or will they use different sums.
Does this Council actually care about the so called service it is supposed to be supplying to the Council Tax payers?
Story after story appears to show that this Council only seems to care about itself, they do not seem to care about any cock-ups that they make, or should i say misjudgements.
What really annoys me is it is OUR money that they are spending, and they want more of our money every year to what could be called mismanagement.
Totally agree, why isn’t our so called MP launching some sort of enquiry into the councils spending, oh yes he might be on the brown envelope list.
our so called MP wont do anything about it is the same as with Red funnel let everyone over here without being tested i go to COWES to shop at ALDI because its cheap and we have the most expensive here have to use a trolley cant lift on and off the launch let alone disabled people
