UPDATED: Firefighters from Ryde and Newport are attending a property fire in the heart of Ryde town this morning (Wednesday), where at least one person has been rescued.
3 appliances – 2 from Ryde and 1 from Newport – were called to the residential dwelling on John Street at shortly after midnight.
Crews wearing breathing apparatus and equipped with hose reels have entered the property – thought to be a block of flats – to tackle the fire.
Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are currently treating one casualty, however their condition is unknown. Police are also on scene.
Due to the closure of the one-way road, Southern Vectis buses are unable to serve John Street and are diverting locally via Bennett Street.
UPDATE @ 01:15 – The fire, which broke out in a flat, has been successfully contained and extinguished by the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.
It has been confirmed that emergency services were alerted to the incident after a neighbour heard a smoke alarm before discovering smoke issuing from the neighbouring flat.
Positive Pressure Ventilation has been used to rid the building of smoke and the occupants have been allowed to return.
One female has been taken to St Mary’s Hospital suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation.
Crews are now standing down from the incident, however the road remains closed for the time being.
UPDATE @ 01:40 – John Street has now reopened to traffic. Emergency crews have left the scene.
