Firefighters have been called to the Newport Prison Estate this morning after reports of a fire near a domestic property.
Several crews including those from Newport and Cowes along with a water carrier from Freshwater are in attendance at the scene on Northumberland Road where a car has caught alight.
Crews are using hose reel jets to extinguish the flames, with smoke from the fire being seen across Newport.
UPDATE @ 09:41 – Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus have approached the area and brought the flaming car under control.
Island Echo has been told by local residents that the car is one of a large number of items including a boat and a jet ski that have been parked in the area.
A nearby garage and container storage unit have also caught alight.
UPDATE @ 10:13 – The fire has now been extinguished by firefighters and the area surrounding the scene dampened down.
Several vehicles have been damaged beyond repair in the garage compound, which residents say has been used to store old decaying motors and a boat – which was also alight.

The burnt out shell of a Smart Car can be seen parked in the area, with damage also being caused to a nearby container unit and the roof and walls of a garage conversion.
Officers from Hampshire Constabulary are now at the scene and are working with firefighters to determine what exactly sparked the fire.
