Sparks seen flying from electric cables outside a popular takeaway in Newport prompted a call to the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service this morning (Sunday).
1 appliance was mobilised to Upper St James’ Street shortly before 11:20 when neighbours saw the situation developing on the exterior wall of Novo.
Firefighters made the area safe and requested the attendance of Scottish and Southern Electricity Network engineers.
It’s understood that electric cables connected with the town’s Christmas tree displays are thought to be behind the incident, which led to a wooden ledge partially burnt.
Shocking..
A loose connection, which causes arcing, as in tiny sparks, which then erode the copper wire and contacts making the gap larger, which, in turn causes more sparking, until the junction box and cable starts to burn.
Overloading can cause overheating, but, normally would cause a protective device ( a fuse or mcb) to blow or trip.
Bad workman imo.
I think it’s something to do with island roads who put the Xmas decorations up so no surprise really
