A 17-year-old boy, thought to be in possession of a firearm at an Isle of Wight educational facility, has been arrested – but Police have seized an unusual item.
Police were called at 15:16 yesterday (Tuesday) over concerns that a teenager within the grounds of the Isle of Wight College in Newport was in possession of an item that appeared to be a firearm.
Officers attended the college before relocating to Cowes, where they located and detained a 17-year-old boy.
During the arrest, a lighter – in the shape of a firearm – was seized.
A spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary says:
“We are satisfied that this incident did not involve a viable firearm and there have been no reports to police at this time of individuals being threatened”.
The 17-year-old was arrested on suspicion of possession of an imitation firearm in a public place and taken to Newport Police Station.
He has since been released from custody but remains under investigation.
