The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have been mobilised to reports of a fire in woodland on the outskirts of Havenstreet this afternoon (Monday).
3 fire appliances – 2 from Ryde and 1 from Newport – are in attendance at Combley Great Wood off of Combley Road between Briddlesford Road and Havenstreet.
A water carrier from Ventnor has also been requested to attend alongside a duty fire officer.
Crews are tackling what is thought to be a woodland fire but the severity and cause are not yet known.
The main road remains open to traffic in both directions.
UPDATE @ 16:05 – A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Fire Service have confirmed they were called to a 300 square meter area of undergrown that had caught fire.
Firefighters remain on scene to bring the fire under control after being initially called to the incident at shortly after 14:45.
UPDATE TUESDAY – 20 lengths of hose and numerous tools were used to tackle the fire.
Blue Watch at Ryde Fire Station have issued a reminder to avoid having campfires and BBQ’s in the forest and to take extra care when discarding smoking materials and rubbish.
They are trying to start a large fire. They hope it will take off and then they can have a laugh ‘cos it’s soooo funny! Complete morons. I wonder if their parents know what they get up to. Or maybe it’s not kids? Teenagers/ adult? Shame on you whoever you are. You obviously don’t appreciate the lovely surroundings we have here on the island.
