A car has left the road and has crashed into a hedge between Shanklin and Whiteley Bank this lunchtime (Thursday).
Emergency services including Police, fire and ambulance crews are at the scene on Shanklin Road, near the junction of Apse Manor Road.
The incident occurred shortly before 12:40.
Diversions are in place on Southern Vectis Route 2 buses between Godshill and Shanklin. Buses will be unable to serve bus stops from Whiteley Bank to Shanklin Library in either direction until further notice.
Island Roads’ street cleansing operatives are on the scene directing traffic around the incident.
UPDATE @ 13:00 – The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have mobilised 3 fire appliances from Shanklin, Sandown and Newport to the incident, alongside a duty fire officer.
Fire crews have assisted with extricating the elderly female driver of the blue Honda Jazz by cutting away a section of the hedgerow to allow the door to be opened.
The road remains open in all directions, although is expected to be temporarily blocked whilst recovery of the vehicle takes place.
UPDATE @ 13:19 – Hampshire Fire Control has confirmed that appliances were called at 12:34.
1 person was released from the vehicle and transferred into the care of the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.
The female occupant of the Honda has not suffered any serious injuries, but is understood to have suffered a medical episode at the wheel.
I’m just taking a guess the driver could be in their older years, because the Honda Jazz is a popular car for older drivers, and I’m sure it’s a nice car because they do look nice

A medical problem… would she still be insured.. should she be driving at all ? What if it was in a town or school crossing….
What if a meteorite came down and hit someone…

I remember that the APSE MANOR ROAD sign was amended some years ago by some rascal -the P had been changed to an R. It always put a smile on my face as I drove past.
