The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are tackling a large field fire in Apse Heath this afternoon (Thursday).
Multiple fire appliances from across the Island have called to Alverstone Road where a field is ablaze.
Firefighters were mobilised to the scene following a 999 call to control at around 14:10.
UPDATE @ 16:45 – Fire appliances from Newport, Ryde and Shanklin are in attendance. 2 water carriers from Freshwater and Ventnor have also been mobilised to the incident.
The fire is said to be approximately 400 x 200m – 8 hectares.
UPDATE @ 16:55 – A spokesperson for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service has said:
“Crews from across @iwightfire are currently dealing with a large fire in the open near Apse Heath involving 8 hectares of fields alight.
“Beaters and 3 hose reels in use.”
UPDATE – The incident has been brought to a close. No persons or animals have been injured in the incident and there is loss of crop.
