FATAL SCOOTERIST CRASH DOWN TO DRINK

binsteadrtcAn inquest has this week heard that being over twice the drink-drive limit resulted in the death of a Binstead man last June.

As first reported by Island Echo, Mr Kenneth Mead, 59, was involved in a fatal road traffic collision on Binstead Road, Ryde during the Isle of Wight Festival last year.

Mr Mead, a former bus driver for Southern Vectis, was travelling on the main road between Ryde and Newport at around 16:10 when he lost control of his scooter and collided with wooden posts at the side of the road.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics, including those from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, the 59-year-old from Parkway died shortly after arriving at St Mary’s Hospital, Newport.

Toxicology reports found Mr Mead to have a blood-alcohol reading of 196. The limit is 80.

The inquest, held in Newport, ruled death by misadventure.
