Firefighters from Ryde, Sandown, Shanklin and Newport are responding to a reported fire at Alamo in Ryde this evening (Wednesday).
4 pumping appliances and an Aerial Ladder Platform are on scene at Ryde Esplanade, but there are no signs of a significant fire.
Island Echo is led to believe that a possible fire had been detected within the extraction system, but it appears to now be out.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to the incident – which has seen the popular restaurant and bar evacuated – at around 19:50.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has an operational commander in attendance, although no injuries are thought to have been sustained.
Part of the Esplanade – between George Street and Union Street – is currently blocked by the responding services.
The fire service has responded to the premises multiple times over the years, including when the building was occupied by ‘Blaze’ pizzas.
UPDATE @ 20:40 – The emergency response has now been stood down with all appliances returning to their individual stations.
A buildup of grease in an extractor fan led to the response, which has been deemed a false alarm.
UPDATE @ 21:51 – Alamo says that they will remain closed for Thursday morning at least following tonight’s incident.
It’s said that an outside company’s failure to properly clean the extraction unit led to a large amount of smoke coming from the ladies toilet, into the restaurant – emanating from the extraction system.
