Following her success in the Freshwater South by-election last week, and as the independent community champion, Councillor Becca Cameron has immediately joined the Empowering Islanders Group.
Becca finished ahead of Bill Nigh (Reform UK), Warren Whyte (Conservative), Emma Cox (Independent), Anne Bamford (Labour) and Tony Zeid (Lib Dem). Becca finished more than 200 votes ahead of her nearest competitor.
By joining the group, Becca is hoping to continue and amplify initiatives promoting suitable housing to meet the needs of Islanders, protection of our beautiful environment, and children’s services.
Empowering Islanders Councillor Chris Jarman JP expressed his congratulations and welcome:
“Becca has a long track record of supporting West Wight residents’ groups and being instrumental in delivering key projects. Her vitality, determination and local support won her the admiration of those from every political persuasion and her focus on replacing poor practice made her the clear community choice.
“We look forward to her contribution to our continued initiatives at Isle of Wight Council under the new committee system.”

Councillor Becca Cameron added:
“I am looking forward to working together with Empowering Islanders. Chris, Peter and I will be a joint force covering the whole of Freshwater, Totland, Yarmouth, Norton, Alum Bay, Compton and Colwell.
“The proposed mass building on our fields ignores our unique protected landscape and will destroy our area and our tourist industry. People visit the West Wight for its beauty and open spaces, for its nature, history, peace and tranquility and not to see mass housing. They ignore the environmental impact that these new estates bring, the lack of infrastructure, the lack of social resources for our current residents, and the devastation to our wildlife and protected species.
“These estates will not answer our housing problems. Greedy developers want lovely areas to build to gain huge profits and this will never result in actual affordable housing. Our lowest paid and our children will never be able to afford them.
“We have a huge fight on our hands but together we will fight!”
Independent is the only way to go thesedays,
they care for the local people, unlike other
parties.
“Empowering” yet another meaningless American word.
