A culvert in Shanklin that collapsed more than 2 months ago is to be fixed over the coming weeks to help prevent flooding.
The Isle of Wight Council has said the repair is necessary to prevent a repeat of the flooding of homes and businesses on Collingwood Road and Brook Path during heavy rain.
Island Echo understands the culvert collapsed as early as the start of September and divers have been utilised to conduct investigations works in the area in the past few weeks.
Emergency works started this morning (Monday) and are expected to take around 4 weeks to complete. As a result, a section of Carter Avenue – near The Co-op – has been made one-way.
Councillor Paul Fuller, Cabinet member for planning, coastal protection and flooding, has said:
“We understand flooding has been a significant issue for local residents and businesses in this area, which is why these works are so important.
“We’ve completed a detailed survey of the culvert to identify the exact areas that need work.
“This proactive approach by the Isle of Wight Council aims to mitigate the risk of flooding and provide relief to the affected community in Shanklin.”
