In July of this year Eldridges Solicitors, with offices in Newport and Freshwater launched their ‘Careers in Legal Service Guide’, a freely available 12-page guide specifically aimed at highlighting the many career opportunities that exist across the legal profession.
An initiative which since launch has been met with significant interest from Island students and gained support from the Islands Schools, Colleges and Recruitment Agencies, leading the firm to be invited to attend careers fairs across the Island and more.
Joni Ade, Associate Director of Eldridges, who created the initiative comments:
“Many Island students are not aware of the wide range of career opportunities available within the legal services profession, which aside from becoming a lawyer include roles across administration and finance, including pathways to become a solicitor that can be achieved from GCSE level and through apprenticeships. Roles that allow everyone when considering their career choices to play to their skills and strengths. Our simple guide is aimed at highlighting the opportunities available, which we hope will also encourage more students to develop legal careers on the Island.”
As part of the initiative, copies of the guide have been sent to career leads and heads at the Islands Secondary School, Colleges and Independent Schools, in addition to many organisations involved in career development and recruitment across the Island. It can also be downloaded from the Eldridges website, with printed copies of the guide available at the many events that will be attended by Eldridges over the coming months

“The response to the guide has been amazing, reflected in the emails and calls to our office, resulting in a second re-print of the printed guide to satisfy demand at the many Careers Events we have been invited to, including those at the Island VI Form, Isle of Wight College, Ryde School with Upper Chine, 1Leisure Careers Fayre and the IOW Construction Group Roadshow. This gives us a valuable opportunity to talk directly to students, parents and teachers about the various options available. I look forward to hearing from more careers leads about supporting their events for students, so that together we can have a positive impact on the lives of young people as they start their careers journey.”
Other opportunities include Eldridges offering work experience placements to students, and internships for those studying law and interested in gaining practical understanding of the profession. Trainee solicitor placements are available to graduates, which combines paid employment with studying for formal qualifications, and Solicitor apprenticeships and on-the-job training opportunities are available as an alternative to full-time university which potentially avoids some student debt.
