UPDATED: An elderly man has tonight (Wednesday) been rescued by firefighters after a fire broke out in the kitchen of his flat in Lake.
Fire crews from Ryde and Sandown were called to a block of flats on Lea Road at just before 20:00 after smoke started to fill the top-floor property.
2 firefighters wearing breathing apparatus have entered the flat and rescued the sleeping man from his bed. The cause of the small fire has been confirmed as cooking left on the hob.
Thankfully, working smoke detectors alerted neighbours to the fire.
Both appliances remain on scene and an ambulance has been called for as a precautionary measure due to smoke inhalation.
UPDATE @ 21:15 – Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are now at Lea Road and are assessing the gentleman.
