Residents in East Cowes say they are shocked that double yellow lines are to be painted in residential areas within hours, without any warning or response to objections raised.
No waiting cones have been placed overnight for line painting to be undertaken in a number of locations across the town – a move that locals have previously stated would have a ‘devastating effect’.
Objections were raised to the 20 different proposed changes that would see the removal of parking spaces in York Avenue, Well Street, Kings Road, Princess Close, Nelsons Close, Mayfield Road and Beatrice Avenue, Connaught Road, East Cowes Esplanade, Hereford Road, Castle Street, Cadets Walk, Broadsmith Avenue, Adelaide Grove and Acorn Gardens.
Locals say they have not received any response from Island Roads or the Isle of Wight Council and that it appears they are steamrolling ahead with the changes anyway.
Speaking about the decision to install new double yellow lines, one resident has said:
“As far as most residents are concerned, and by the sounds of it East Cowes Town Council, this decision had not been made and if so it has never been published in an accessible way. On top of this nobody that submitted an objection seems to have been considered or even contacted about any decisions.
“The general consensus is that either Island Roads ignored all the objections, or that this is a money-making scheme given the large displacement and no other options but to illegally park now, effectively creating a revenue stream.
“This is an example of both needless spending and uninformed implementation”.

Another local has described the situation in Princess Close:
“You can park approx 12 cars on the road currently. Tomorrow they will be painting lines that’ll reduce this down to 6 (one of which is a disabled bay). Our road has 18 houses but only 7 of them have driveways so the remaining 11 houses will be battling over 6 spaces!”
Outrageous….. What has been the justification ? Safety ??? Money Stream ????
This council is …. The lot beed booting out they serve no one and no purpose what so ever.
This is part of the scheme to make the the entire island road network pay to park. One little slice at a time to stop everyone being up in arms about it.

The last council already said that their traffic reduction policy was to charge more money. Once Newport gets City status, there will be an emissions zone. Quite handy as every main road leads to copins Bridge.
yes and we paid for the councils electric vehicles to give them a free rain going any were they want plus free parking for them even on double yellows . I cant say all i want to say about them so please make up your on minds on my 5 dots…..

Typical. I also objected to this and heard nothing. There is also no mention of this work on IR either so this is blatently them trying to sneak work in under the radar as they probably know the consultation wasn’t done correctly. Apparantly there was a 6-36 against support for this and the cabinet blindly accepted it. Tell me that isnt money making schemes..
I can’t comment on other roads as I don’t know what is happening, however I am glad that they are painting yellow lines at the junction of Old Road and Hefford Road as people are constantly parking on the corner causing an obstruction to people who want to cross the road and also making it impossible to see properly at that junction. Of course, it will all be a total waste of time and money as there will be zero enforcement as usual.
To be fair, from first principles, I always found it weird how much public space is granted for storage of a private car, that’s also most often a 5-seater inactive for 90% of the day and used most of the remaining 10% just by 1 person. Massive waste of public space we are all paying for. Yet asking for a pavement in order to NOT DIE under 2 tonnes of steel as a pedestrian is often met with moaning about lack of said public space!
If you want space for your car, own it. Maybe get a smaller house if you like driving so much.
I do own my own space for exactly that reason: I don’t think public should subsidise my storage.
Yep, good shout, A lot of driveways are not used, or used for something else.
But my main gripe is, on the more modern estates (island wide), is that 99% of garage’s that are built into the house’s are not used to store the house holders car in which they are intended for. Instead, becoming an extra bedroom or used for the washing machine and hubby’s tools.
Also add to the fact that a lot of 3/4 bedroom houses have at least 2/3 cars not including visitors, then what do you expect. If you own your own car then you should have your own private parking space, and stop blocking up the Queen’s highways.
Whilst I agree with what you say about the pavement, most houses on the West side of East Cowes don’t and can’t have ‘car storage’ because they are Victorian or Edwardian and were built before motor car invention and ownership. This is not the way to force people into overpriced and ineffective public transport that half the time won’t even get them to work or school and back when they need to get there anyway. Do better, Isle of Wight Council.
Can the exact details be published along with the Act and Section on which it relies, also the by law covering the same showing this is a lawful order. and the date it was passed into law.
If they want to start putting yellow lines down can I suggest they come to Hawthorn Meadows so as to stop people parking on the road or on pavements when they have parking spaces or garages.
I don’t know about the other roads, but feel the junction of Connaught Road and Oakfield Road does need them. A very dangerous corner

Vote with our votes! Well it didnt work very well at the last “election” as sixteen people assumed office as councillors without gaining a numerical majority of votes. How can they represent the majority`s wish on any issue including the painting of double yellow lines?
Just one of many reasons not to move to East Cowes then.
They will be using either ‘climate change’ or ‘safety’ as the excuse to paint yet another set of double yellow lines, which now seems to be an annual occurrence as the council looks to make life even more difficult and expensive for the islanders who are forced to pay their platinum plated pay and lavish pensions – maybe someone from country hall can tell us how many additional miles of ‘pension lines’ they have introduced in the last 10 years, how many speed limits they have reduced and how much additional revenue they have swallowed from this ?
In another waterside location I regularly visit on the East Coast the residents put up a fight against the agency running the roadside parking and they had to remove the red and yellow lines.
I bet this has something to do with the Southern Vectis’ ‘no parking on these roads’ wish list that was published last year.
Is this another classic case of the Council deciding what THEY want and NOT what the public they are supposed to serve want?
I would have thought that every property in the location of where these yellow lines were going would of had a letter or at least signs put up notifying what the Council intended.

Need to make quite sure that the lines are a legal Council ruling. Island Roads as a private company have no legal powers to mess with the road system, they may advise but can only act on behalf of the Council
