In its second mission to the Island of the day so far, the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance has landed on the beach at Shanklin this morning (Wednesday) to aid an unwell individual at a local B&B.
It was shortly before 07:00 that the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, assisted by firefighters from Shanklin, responded to a life-threatening medical emergency at the Esplanade when a man was taken ill in his accommodation.
Due to the severity of the situation, a critical care paramedic has been joined at the scene by specialist doctors and paramedics from the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.
The yellow and green helicopter has landed on the beach directly opposite The Waterfront Inn. It touched down at around 07:55.
Efforts are underway to stabilise a male, who is set to be transferred to a mainland hospital for specialist treatment.
It was during the early hours of this morning that HIOWAA responded to another critical emergency in the centre of Ryde, as reported by Island Echo.
UPDATE @ 09:03 – Efforts to save the man’s life continue more than 2 hours after emergency services were called out.
Due to the patient’s condition deteriorating as he was prepared to be airlifted, plans are now being set to take him to St Mary’s Hospital by land ambulance.
Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team and a Senior Coastal Operations Officer from HM Coastguard have now joined the incident to assist in moving the patient back off the beach.
Police are also in attendance.
UPDATE @ 10:00 – Sadly, despite the best efforts of all involved, the man’s life could not be saved.
Next of kin have been informed.
