A fire with suspicious origins has been contained and extinguished at the former Cygnet Hotel in Sandown this morning (Wednesday). At around 00:30, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to smoke issuing from the derelict hotel on the corner of Carter Street and Broadway. At least 3 pumping appliances from Sandown, Shanklin and Ryde – and the temporary Incident Command Support vehicle from Newport – were mobilised to the scene, with firefighters working to extinguish the flames and prevent the situation from developing. Thankfully, the fire is now out having been prevented from taking hold. It’s understood the fire was located in the basement. The Broadway was closed in both directions for a time but has since reopened, with fire crews standing down from the incident at 02:05.
