A driver has voluntarily surrendered their licence following a crash in Bembridge this morning (Wednesday).
Police were called to Foreland Road in the village at around 10:00 when 2 vehicles collided.
Officers attended the scene and it soon became clear that one of the drivers involved had eyesight issues. A roadside eye test was carried out, which the offending driver failed.
As a result of the crash and the inability to see sufficiently, the male driver voluntarily surrendered their driving licence.
A grey Ford Ecosport has been left at the scene.
The Joint Operations Unit attended the collision shortly after carrying out speed checks in Apse Heath. Within just 2 minutes of setting up the speed gun, a driver was caught travelling at 46mph in a 30mph limit. He will now face 3 points and a £100 fine.
Driving and your eyesight - What are the legal requirements?
You must be able to read (with glasses or contact lenses, if necessary) a car number plate made after 1st September 2001 from a distance of 20 metres.
You must also meet the minimum eyesight standard for driving by having a visual acuity of at least decimal 0.5 (6/12) measured on the Snellen scale (with glasses or contact lenses, if necessary) using both eyes together or, if you have sight in one eye only, in that eye.
You must also have an adequate field of vision - your optician can tell you about this and do a test.

Stupid old berk should of surrender his license long ago if he knew he could not see correctly! Thank god a person or child wasn’t injured.
Licence. Illiterate fool.
Wow Tonald Drump, he had one letter wrong. You’re an intolerant fool!
So where does it say the driver was elderly? Another bad assumption possibly? Bad eyesight can affect any age and there are those that don’t want to spoil their image by wearing spectacles. Possibly not an incorrect assumption in this case but it can be no more than an assumption, never the less.
Clearly ‘old’ as anyone young would have their eyesight or eyeware sorted, this person was old, as are many in Bembridge, and likely, again like many in Bembridge too arrogant to ever admit, unless faced with the law, that they could ‘ever’ be in the wrong.
What’s worse, a young driver drink or drug driving, or an elderly driver???
The vast amount of accidents are much younger, wether or not drink or drug driving. then, there’s the mobile phone idiot’s…
Theory retest every 10 years. At the Theory test they check your eye sight and ability to react to changing unexpected situations. If you fail, have to retake the full driving test.
Driving is a privilege gained by proving you have the skill to drive, paying for insurance, road tax and MOT.
It is also part of the highway code to only drive when you are fit to do so.
At the theory test they check your eye sight?not true mate
I think you’ll find that was a suggestion to take the theory test every 10 years, at which time you’ll have your eyesight checked as well.
Seems like a reasonable idea to me.
Anyway ask John, apparently he’s your ‘mate’.
It’s a suggestion Bob.
Not at theory test. They usually ask you a quick question in the practical test by asking if you can read a number plate.
Island drivers need regular psychiatric testing among other treatments, MOST Island drivers are mentally unable to drive safely they don’t give a dam.
Unfortunately, many will disagree, that’s why accidents will continue for a very long time…
Well said..
46 in a 30 limit that’s nothing, they go through Havenstreet at about 60 and most of the road has no footpath! We never see a speed trap here though!!
Same drivel. Get houses with any other council.
Yawn
Give it a rest Chad.
Licence.!
Should of gone to spec savers
‘Have’, not ‘of’.
P perfect shame the world wasn’t
Time to start using that free bus pass I guess!
Once a driver reaches 75 they should not be allowed to drive a car. They already get free bus travel so there is no need for them to drive.
I bet everybody driving has come across terrible driving by the elderly each day.
Selfish pig respect the elderly
The elderly are a lot safer than the younger so called drivers, how often do you hear crashes involving the elderly???.
Much Much less than younger drivers!…
How often? All the flipping time, sir! They can’t see, can’t reverse, forget they ain’t driving the car they learnt in, and are mentally computing the prices of kippers of the fish counters of all the major supermarkets, whilst at the same time arguing with wifey about Polo mints in the footwell and wrestling with driving gloves as they make ’em look like Sir Jackie Stuart! Ah yes, the elderly. Heroes of our time. RTA figures suggest otherwise.
No buses run in my area, the car is a necessity . ,
The car is a luxury not a necessity. No busses run, my foot! Where do you live? Sark… If you are in the sticks and a wee bit ‘isolated’ (face it that’s why you moved there!) maybe ’tis your own doing. Why not sell your house to a local family for a reasonable price rather than cash in by selling to more excessive house owners or developers? Do us all a favour. We can all be a mite judgemental, if you want to bimble down that path… Regards.
I doubt you would be saying that on the eve of your 75th birthday?
Agree
I resent your assumption. Retired advanced police driver car and motorcycle followed by driving course authorisation to drive blue light ambulance plus several courses in anti hijack driving …. Although 75 still able and competent to drive and certainly not an old doddery twot. Can you match my qualifications. I have forgotten more than you will ever know about driving
What about the secondary element of the report where a driver doing 46mph in a 30mph area was caught within 2 mins of a remote speed gun set up in Apse Heath? This was probably part of Operation Holly but this provides further evidence that Island-wide speed traps need to be regularly set up throughout the year with public consultations on their locations, given everyone will know the obvious places.
One less soppy old duffer on the islands roads dilly dallying around at 20mph, that just leaves a few more thousand left go who should also have their licenses taken away then start with the idiots who drive everywhere at 80mph!
What an offensive comment!
Driver was doing 40! not 20mph!
I do not think ANY of you have the right to comment when none of you seem intelligent enough to (1) write a sensible comment and (2) MORE ANNOYINGLY actually spell something correctly!! Makes the IW folk look pretty thick – PLEASE stop!! Happy Christmas and stay safe
