Residents living in Oakfield in Ryde were given a rude awakening this morning (Sunday) when a car crashed into metal railings on St John’s Hill, causing significant damage.
Witnesses have told Island Echo that the male driver – suspected of being in drink – ran from the scene after crashing his Vauxhall Astra into a fence surrounding properties between School Street and High Street.
The incident took place at around 07:30 as a apparent result of the car coming around a right hand bend too fast and the driver losing control.
Police were called to the scene and awaited the arrival of a recovery agent, who has since removed the vehicle from the hedge in which it came to rest.
