UPDATED: Police have this morning (Sunday) detained the driver of a vehicle following a road traffic collision on Parkhurst Road in Newport.
Officers were called to the scene near Horsebridge Hill at midnight after a car collided into the rear of a pick-up truck.
The driver of the car – which has been heavily damaged – made off from the scene in the direction of Cowes. He has since been detained by officers close to Noke Common.
No one has been injured in the incident, despite the fleeing driver having bullseyed the windscreen. The road remains open in both directions.
Whilst the pick-up has sustained damage, the vehicle is still roadworthy and is expected to be driven away from the scene. Recovery has been arranged for the car.
UPDATE @ 01:00 – Stag Lane Motors have recovered the vehicle from the scene and debris has been cleared.
The detained male has been taken into custody at Newport Police Station.
UPDATE MONDAY: Mr Samuel Groves of Gurnard has been jailed for a total of 44 weeks at the Isle of Wight Combined Court in Newport today following Sunday morning’s incident.
Groves, who crashed his grandmother’s car, was deemed to be in breach of a suspended sentence for similar offences.
He has also received a 2-year driving ban and has been ordered to pay £115.
