Downside beat Oakfield in the Under-16 Cup Final at Westwood Park last night (Wednesday).
Downside, who featured 2 players with Newport first team experience – Frankie Foster and Ollie Linington – dominated the first 40 minutes but were unable to break down a resolute Oakfield defence.
Jordi Shepherd was unlucky not to have scored the opening goal for Downside when his attempted lob bounced off the crossbar in the 19th minute.
Oakfield put the ball in the net at the end of the half but had their goal disallowed for a foul on the Downside keeper.

After the game, Downside manager Craig Egerton-Read commented:
“I’m really pleased with how the boys performed this evening, against a strong Oakfield team. After a first half of few chances, we made the most of the early pressure in the second half with some well taken goals, which tipped the game in our favour.
“We were impressed with their maturity on the ball to see the game out and see off some late pressure. A nice way to cap off an enjoyable final season of youth football.
A massive thanks to Stewart Shepherd and Josh Gwilliam for all they have done for the team, and to all the parents for their support.
“Finally, thanks to Joe McCormack and Calum McFarlane for putting everything in place for the final, to all the officials and to Jamie Phillimore and his Oakfield team for playing their part in what was an enjoyable game of football.”
