Care home residents at Ryde’s Hazel Lodge were treated to a ‘hee-haw-larious” time when a duo of friendly donkeys from the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary came for a visit last week.
Hazel Lodge is a nursing home in Ryde managed by Island Healthcare, a provider of residential and nursing care on the Isle of Wight.
The gentle animals mingled with residents and staff, offering plenty of opportunities for stroking and hugs. The visit was part of Hazel Lodge’s ongoing commitment to providing meaningful activities for its residents, including those living with dementia and other complex needs.
Staff ensured that residents, regardless of mobility, had the chance to interact with the donkeys, who were a hit from the moment they arrived.
Ian Bennett, Managing Director at Hazel Lodge said:
“We were delighted to welcome the donkey sanctuary to Hazel Lodge, bringing joy and creating meaningful connections for our residents. Experiences like these not only enrich lives but also provide a wonderful opportunity for companionship and engagement, fostering a strong sense of community.”
The visit highlighted the therapeutic benefits of spending time with animals, from reducing stress to sparking joy and conversation among residents.
As you would guess, the donkeys trotted away leaving plenty of smiles behind.
