The Isle of Wight is languishing in 16th place in the Orkney Island Games medals table after failing to manage a podium place on Tuesday.
In athletics, Jacob and Noah Patey were beaten in the final of the 400metres Hurdles by Guernsey gold medallist Nicholas Ackermann. Archie Pearson came 8th in the final of the 1500metres in a time of 4:04.80.
In swimming, the Isle of Wight’s men’s freestyle team of William Davidson, George Hayward, Harry Poynter and Benjamin Van der Helstraete finished 5th in the final of the 50metres relay in a time of 1:35.79, 5seconds behind the gold medal winning team the Isle of Man. Backstroke silver medallist George Hayward also competed in the final of the 50metres Butterfly, in which he took 6th place in a time of 57.21.
In cycling, 5 Isle of Wight cyclists competed in the Men’s Individual Mountain Bike Criterium. Ewan Cook put in the best performance, coming 9th in 48:44, with Oliver Nolan 18th in 51:00, Devon Badman 21st in 47.17 and Alfie Haydon 24th in 49:17.
The Isle of Wight women’s football team suffered a 0-4 defeat at the hands of Jersey to finish bottom of Group B. Tomorrow (Thursday), our footballers take on the Norwegian island of Hitra in the 9th-place playoff at 12:00.
Our female badminton players have had a relatively successful day with Anna Showan and Isabelle Honnor battling their way through to the final 16. Anna next faces Orkney’s Gemma Foulis with Isabelle taking on the Isle of Man’s Jessica Li.
The Isle of Wight Ladies’ Golf team – Sophie Beardsall, Lucy Burke, Caroline Johnson and Sammi Keen – remain in the gold medal position after the 2nd round of the team event, 10 ahead of their closest challengers Gotland. Sophie has dropped to the bronze medal position in the individual event after a round of 72, 1 stroke behind joint leaders Emma Lindman of Aland and Sienna Mosquera of Bermuda.
Our Men’s Golf team – George Foreman, Christopher Hayward, Conner Knight and Nathaniel Riddett – are in the bronze medal position behind leaders Isle of Man and hosts Orkney. Christopher currently occupies the silver medal position in the individual event, 7 strokes behind leader Daryl Callister from the Isle of Man.
The Isle of Wight sailing team – Arthur Farley, Oliver Mayo, Oliver Smith and Harry White – continue to dominate their discipline and remain in the gold medal spot. Oliver Mayo stays in first place in ILCA 6, after winning 5 of his 7 races. Arthur Farley continues to impress in ICLA 7 with 6 wins in 7 outings and appears to be strong favourite to take gold. Harry White is in the bronze medal position in ICLA 7, level on points with the Isle of Man’s Timothy Dunn.
The Faroe Islands lead the medals table at the end of Day 4 with 41 podium places: 21 gold, 13 silver and 7 bronze. Jersey are 2nd with 35 podium places: 15 gold, 11 silver and 9 bronze.
The Isle of Wight currently has 2 podium places – both silver.
