Bosses at St Mary’s Hospital are appealing to Isle of Wight residents for help in easing the ongoing pressure on services across the local NHS and at the Island’s only hospital.
A high number of bedblockers – those who don’t need to be in hospital but are unable to be moved elsewhere – means that there is a greater demand on the NHS than there needs to be.
Islanders are being encouraged to do what they can to help ease the situation, including collecting family and friends from the hospital at the earliest opportunity and only attending A&E in an emergency.
Steve Parker, Medical Director, said:
“We continue to look at all our options and work with our partners across the Island and on the mainland to improve this situation. We have high numbers of patients who are not in need of hospital care, and we are asking the local community to help us with making sure that those patients get home or to the most appropriate care setting to support their ongoing needs as soon as possible.
“When we can discharge patients safely, it gives us more capacity to treat the increasing numbers of people that are coming into our emergency and urgent care departments every day with potentially life-threatening conditions and injuries.
“While we are in this period of sustained high demand, we also urge you not to attend the emergency department (ED) unless it’s an emergency: NHS 111 online can help you find where to get the right help and support.”
The Isle of Wight NHS Trust is asking members of the public to help by:
- Collecting family and friends from hospital as soon as they are ready to be discharged, to free up beds for those who need them
- Visit NHS 111 online or call NHS 111 for heath advice, or alternatively contact your local pharmacist or GP
- Think about the most appropriate NHS service for your needs and to only call 999 in the event of a life-threatening illness or injury
Come on baby boomers, get off the golf course and come and pick your parents up !

And all the Millennials, stop taking your kids to A&E for a sore throat or a runny nose !

Here we go again, the continuing moaning from the hospital trust about the issues being someones else’s fault, where is your strategy for resolving the issue other than telling families to pick their relatives up when probably they brought them to hospital in the first place because they needed treatment, why do the hospital not build a nursing home, staff it with qualified medical staff, planning permission would be given and look after all these bed blockers until such time as they are well enough not to need social care, it is being done by by far more enlightened trusts in other parts of the UK.

Staff with qualified medical staff? And where do you envision the Hospital obtaining such professionals from? We are 40,000 short of Nurses across the country already. Why on Earth would anyone want to move to this place? There isn’t even sufficient housing for them!

I have said it before
If you shut Ryde Hospital, Frank James Hospital, Shanklin Hospital, The Private Hospital,
Demolish Polars etc. then why do you think there is no room left at St Mary’s.
The GPs are no longer looking after the sick at home like they once did.
So people become so sick they have to phone 999 (use of Ambulances) then get admitted.
The once elderly managing in their own home can no longer return to self care.

Bedblockers !! How disrespectful and inhumane . Most of these people are waiting placements through no fault of their own. Let’s show a bit of respect.
As for those going up for stupid minor ailments .. go see your GP. Free the hospital staff to deal with the real issues and emergencies . Use the old noggin and common sense if some of you out there can still do that in this day and age .
