Reports of potentially 2 dead dolphins on the beach at Gurnard prompted a call out for The Needles Coastguard Rescue Team this morning (Tuesday).
Solent Coastguard tasked officers to investigate at 08:04.
Once on scene, it was discovered that a female Harbour Porpoise had recently died and washed ashore. Details were gathered and along with photographs which have since been forwarded to the National History Museum.
The other reported dolphin was in fact a dogfish.
The Isle of Wight Council has been contacted to arrange for the removal of the deceased mammal.
