Ventnor resident and long-term community champion David Groocock has launched his Wroxall, Lowtherville and Bonchurch by-election campaign.
The campaign launch, held last Thursday, garnered a wealth of support from voters, town mayors, councillors and letters of endorsement from Isle of Wight East MP Joe Robertson and Police and Crime Commissioner for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight Donna Jones.
The by-election was triggered following the resignation of Councillor Rodney Downer at the start of the month. The Wroxall resident had occupied the seat since 2017.
2024 General Election candidate Groocock was the first person to throw his hat into the ring.
David told his supporters:
“I’m standing for my community as I am passionate about delivering for the deserving people of Wroxall, Lowtherville and Bonchurch. As many will know, I stood as an independent parliamentary candidate in the 2024 general election, as I was determined to ensure the state of the island’s roads and the plight of our schools were key priorities in the minds of voters.
“Like so many others, I feel totally let down by the independent councillors, to the point where I can no longer be associated with them. My work with Cllr Ed Blake on the Leeson Road has allowed me to understand how committed the Conservatives are to providing for the good people of Wroxall, Lowtherville and Bonchurch. I am determined to deliver for our community.”
“Rodney Downer worked very hard for our ward, but sadly, Wroxall Primary School’s future remains in the balance, and the roads through Wroxall are nothing short of dangerous. I am determined to finish this essential work that Rodney started on behalf of our residents and consider smooth, well-managed roads and long-term education security as key priorities as I continue to fight on behalf of the families, businesses and future of Wroxall, Lowtherville and Bonchurch.”
Polling for the Wroxall, Lowtherville and Bonchurch by-election is on Thursday 10th July 2025.
