Customers affected by Wightlink’s data breach last month have slammed the company for their slow response and lack of action, with 1 claiming they know how the data was obtained – through a compensation form.
As previously reported by Island Echo, Wightlink has written to customers this week to advise that personal details such as names, addresses, bank details and signatures have been compromised as a result of a sophisticated cyber attack.
One of those customers has explained to Island Echo that they thought the communication was a scam email at first, due to the email’s appearance and suggestion of clicking a link to obtain something for free. The same customer claims the data has been obtained from a PDF compensation form.
The reader has said:
“This was as a result of a claim for compensation for a long-delayed sailing on 30th July. They requested that a form be completed to included name, address, bank details and a signature. All of those details were in a PDF form sent to Wightlink by email, so clearly stored on their system.
“Wightlink say that they don’t store bank details but that is clearly incorrect as that is the precise information that has been stolen.
“As a side issue, it took much chasing up and over two months to receive that compensation”.
Disgruntled at the situation, the individual has gone on to say:
“Wightlink has handled this incident appallingly. They clearly have little interest in their customers, nor acknowledge that they are obliged to assist them, nor in fact that they have done anything wrong.
“They have sent out an email out that looks like it could be a scam. It includes a link to tap on to obtain free Experian access. All advice is to never tap on links in unsolicited emails, so whoever gave them advice to do this is clearly not a cyber professional
“They are refusing to discuss matters with affected customers by phone, merely saying that if you have any queries get in touch by email, do not telephone. I’ve yet to receive any response to an email sent to them yesterday.
“The usual procedure in these circumstances would be to set up a dedicated response line to answer affected customers queries and concerns. They have done nothing other than send out an email which itself looks like a scam”.
Wightlink says it will be making no further comment at this stage as the matter is an ongoing criminal investigation. I sent my thoughts by email yesterday, absolutely appalling the email sent by Wightlink, I have used various cards to pay so now I need to check 6 cards regularly!
This is sign of things to come, expect more soon. Whatever happened to all those Island schools that were attacked last year ?. There will be compensation to those that have money taken if
My email had a number to call which is a dedicated line. Very helpful people so not sure what you got or on about.
I never claimed for those dates you say so don’t think that.
all companies should remove all cards details once tranaction is completed.and should be opened to a prosecution if a customers bank details has been clearly alowed to be abused
Would any lawyers out there like to start a class action lawsuit ? I have lost two nights sleep over this and spent hours on phone to bank, setting up apps on my phone etc etc.
Perhaps was an office computer used to deal with refunds, Multilink refunds etc and someone opened a spam email on it. Whatever it was .. It has already caused damage. I’m up for signing up for a class action lawsuit !
