P1110810Following the first day of sailing the social scene for competitors kicked off with a party sponsored by Mount Gay Rum.

In the past, Mount Gay – said to be the world’s oldest rum dating from 1703 – has been a sponsor at Cowes Week and it was good to see them return. In previous years the parties have been very popular; 1 year a beach scene was created in Shepard’s Wharf complete with deck chairs on sand.

All competing crews had been issued with wristbands to enable them to enjoy this opening party and although scheduled for a 19:00 start guests were queuing outside the Cowes Yacht Haven Event Centre before 18:00.

By 18:45 the crowd had swelled to hundreds in anticipation of not only receiving a welcoming glass of Mount Gay Rum, but one of the much-coveted Mount Gay Red Caps which were available to the first 300 enterings. Around the world, sailing events often host parties with these red caps on offer and old ones are now collectables.

Good humour prevailed amongst those queuing for the party with impromptu singing and on the dot of 19:00 the gates opened and the first red caps were handed out. With live music, some in Caribbean style, the party was soon in full swing.
