The troubled Cowes Floating Bridge has once again been suspended due to a problem with the prow of the vessel.
A now regular passenger launch has been put into operation between East Cowes and Cowes whilst engineers work to resolve the problem. Motorists are having to divert via Newport.
Island Echo understands that today’s suspension is as a result of the deterioration of a prow cable.
This latest suspension comes after Council Leader Dave Stewart last night confirmed that the vessel is not fit for purpose, as reported by Island Echo earlier this morning.

Will we Ever have real leadership in the Isle of Wight Council????,
I’m sick and tired of hearing about this very expensive failure of this floating monstrosity, our Council tax is going up every bloody year in order to fund failure..
Dip sticks running the Council!..SHUT IT DOWN!!!!
I enough is enough, if you can’t make a decision move over to someone that can…
Who there is no quality or forward thinking in any of the parties on the island
That’s a good question, who?..
We need every tax payer on the island to voice their disatishfaction to this council, and hopefully the media will make sure thay know how we feel.
The hole island should desend on Newport Town Hall and have the biggest demonstration the island has ever had, I’m sure the mainstream media would show up.
However, a good organiser would be needed and Covid would be a problem at this time.
I assume you are referring to any of the parties who have held power on the Island?
No the opposition parties have no depth of quality in them either
No way,how unusual, such a reliable service and this happens
How can a cable deteriorate in such a short time. Even my old Skoda lasted longer.
I imagine because the vessel was not built to a suitable specification, because (and I concede I am speculating here) the brief given to the naval architects was inadequate. Seems the most likely answer.
Really this does surprise me
Just leave this story as breaking news as it will always be happening.
So who wants to hear the best joke?!! …
Wow it did not take long to come to that conclusion… after how many millions spent and lost…
Float, Break, Repair…Repeat!
Hahaha, they wouldn’t print my comment about putting it and us mere mortals out of our misery with this heap of junk foisted upon us !!!!!
And a certain person saying he agreed it’s junk .
Revelation ???? ELECTION ??????
This POS has had enough of our money WASTED on it. Why are the council still throwing our money away on this obvious lost cause.
Why has it taken Dave Stewart all this time to admit it’s not fit for purpose? What about all the money, our money, that has been thrown at this wreck up to this point. The people of the IOW have been mugged one too many times. Shut it down. We’ve grown used to not being able to use it so we can wait 6 months or more while someone competent builds an exact reproduction of the floating bridge before this heap.
It definitely needs putting out of it’s misery , let’s hope if they do get money back on this crap they cancel council tax for a few good Years!!!
Won’t hold my breath though !!!!
But it would be are money rightfully returned.
Is there not an insurance policy that protects such poor workmanship ! like anything in the “normal” world is. When so much money is spent on an item could they not claim because of the very poor, inadequate construction of the useless piece of cr..that has been nothing but a waste of money. Put the old one back …IT WORKED!!!
What an absolute waste of good money… be ashamed….. be very ashamed.
It is very unlikely that the naval architects who were hired to design the floating bridge would have produced a vessel not fit for purpose. They can only produce a design based on the client brief they are given and I would be interested to whether or not that brief is in the public domain ?
