The Government has confirmed that the first COVID-19 vaccine has been approved for use within the UK, marking a major breakthrough in the fight against coronavirus.
The Pfizer and BioNtech developed vaccine will be available from early next week and will initially be given to the most vulnerable in the community, including those in care homes. NHS workers will also be first in line for the jab.
Further details on how the vaccination programme will be rolled out on the Isle of Wight will be released in due course.
Today’s major news comes after the much-anticipated vaccine, which claims to have 95% effectivity, was approved by the independent Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
The first Islanders to get the vaccine will be older adults’ living in local care homes and those working in care homes. This will be closely followed by all those over the age of 80 and all health and social care workers. After that, GPs will offer vaccines to Islanders based on their age – and only those with a registered doctor on the Isle of Wight will be able to get a vaccine here.
For those under the age of 50, known as the rest of the population, it is unclear when a vaccine will be offered but it is expected that the vaccination programme will be completed here by March or April 2021, according to the Island’s authorities.
Those under 50 are considered to be the lowest priority and it’s known that the vaccine won’t be offered to under 18s. However, high-risk and moderate-risk adults under 65 will be prioritised.
10million doses of the vaccine will be in the UK by the end of the year, meaning 5million people will be vaccinated in the next few weeks (around 7% of the country’s population). A further 30million doses will follow, taking the total number of people expected to be vaccinated with the Pfizer product to 20million – 30% of the population. Other vaccines are to follow with 100million doses of the Oxford vaccine on order for the UK.

The long term study is being done in real time, with millions of guinea pigs – whose to say that this won’t have adverse effects in six months, a year, two years.
Also it is being rolled out to those who are least likely to refuse or are easy to convince.

What the drug companies have done to get the vaccine to market faster is to take on a massive financial risk. With a normal drug development program they only move to the next phase when the results are known from the previous phase. They do this so not to waste money on testing that is pointless if the drug does not work. For these vaccines that have began phase 2 testing whilst phase 1 is still in progress and the results being examined. They started phase 3 testing whilst phase 2 was still in progress and and the results being examined. This has sped up the development. Buy the time it is approved the same amount of testing will have been done and the same checks and balances will have been done.

The logistics for the USA vaccine could be worrying and expensive, then the Oxford vaccination could be cheaper but which one works better??.

I think you’ll find that health care professionals are the ones most likely to take part on trials and most likely to want the vaccine. This is because they are educated and know about this stuff.

However hard this has been for those whose health/business/ability to just pay the bills has been impacted and those whose business can now look to a future with a little more certainty.
