Police and Crime Commissioner for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, Donna Jones, has warned that the Council Tax precept which funds policing must rise, or she will be forced to implement savings.
It is likely that the precept will rise by 4.2% – or £10 per annum for a typical Band D property – in response to the increasing cost of policing across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. This increased cost includes a pay rise for officers of 5% amid a backdrop of general inflation sitting at 10% but with the Government only coughing up an extra 1.1%, creating a funding shortfall.
In order to reduce the shortfall, the policing precept, which is paid by every household in the county, could well go up again. It was raised by 4.4% this financial year.
If the precept was to rise by the maximum then a Band D property will pay £10 more per year – or 83p a month. For those in Bands A-C the increase would be less than 83p, but on the flip side, those in Bands E-H would be paying more.
A survey has now been launched to gather the views of local residents to gauge the support for a number of different options.
Donna Jones, Police and Crime Commissioner, has said:
“I know this is a very difficult time financially for the country, and potentially for you as an individual, and I am conscious that any rise in your council tax to support policing will come at the same time as other costs are also increasing.
“However, it is also a difficult time for funding your police force; police are not immune to the cost of living crisis and therefore the 2023/24 budget is being set against the backdrop of a challenging economic environment with general inflation, pay costs, utilities and fuel costs all rising.
“If I don’t increase the council tax for 2023/24, I will need to work with the Constabulary to implement savings, with an inevitable impact on the overall service level which can be provided. I see first-hand day in day out the vital work which the Constabulary undertakes to keep the residents of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight safe, and I would not wish to see this compromised.
“However, I know that any increase in the amount you pay must be considered carefully. I also hear very loudly that you want to see more officers in your communities. That’s why it’s so important that you complete this short survey and have your say on continued investment”.
You can have your say by filling in the survey at https://survey.alchemer.eu/s3/90503016/Annual-police-budget-precept-consultation-have-your-say.
The survey will close at 23:59 on Sunday 4th December 2022.

Enough…..
I/we have no more to give.
Cut the services as they are doing no good as it is.
Crims know even IF caught the courts can’t jail them as our prisons are filled with the rejects from all corners of the globe now.
So why pay more for a useless service
Yep totally agree .. when did you last see police on the beat .. only show up for daft things ..
we have NO MORE money to give any useless service including the council
stop painting Rainbows on the patrol cars & posting videos of coppers doing The Macarena on Tik Tok, that’ll save a few quid!
F**k off I am not paying anymore towards this joke of an island police force.
Who needs them
Who would have thought that the tax payer would be paying for the 20,000 extra, sorry, replacement police officers that Boris promised? I’m sure most people would love a 4.25% payrise. Not had anything in 3 years
Boris was a Born LIAR
I hope that anyone who disagrees with any increase will complete the survey and not just moan on here. I completed it in around 3 minutes as there were only around 10 questions and there is the option and opportunity to state that you want NO increase. We have received no better police service for all the increases we have faced so it is time to say no more.
But, do you honestly think it’ll make one iota of difference what you fill in on the survey?
No, it probably won’t, but unless we all make our feelings known through the proper channels i.e. the survey, then we give them the opportunity to say no-one was against an increase. We can also use it to let them know that they will be voted out of office come the next election if they ignore us.
done but not going to hang about for a copper
They will raise the TAX but still we’ll have less police than we had 5 years ago. They are robbing the tax payer blind. Meanwhile the new king avoids paying 100’s of millions in inheritance tax.
Pay more for ultimately less.
Get stuffed, we’ve had enough of being fleeced, please islanders, band together in solidarity and let us revolt against this regime.
“please islanders, band together in solidarity and let us revolt against this regime”
definitely!,.. but I bet they won’t ,..
this is all because of a lack of funding, by the conservative government, to keep up with inflation (a lot of which was caused by the conservative government),.. but most Islanders voted for the conservatives & seem totally blinkered & cant see (or won’t admit) that they’ve been conned by the Tories for years…
So I bet that, even having ‘Half Sausage Seely’ for an MP,… & after the lies and deceit of Johnson, and the comic incompetence of Truss,.. the majority of them will still keep believing the lies & voting conservative. 🙁
And you seriously believe it would be different under any other party? Wake up, they are all as bad as each other. All politicians are liars.
I agree that all politicians are liars…
(like the old joke… Q: how do you know when a politician is lying?… A:his (or her, or their) lips move)
but seriously,.. no,.. they’re not quite all as bas as each other.
Did you know that… (on average, since 1960), inflation has risen 10 times faster while the conservatives have been in power, than when Labour have?
average increase in inflation rate (CPI), per year, with Tories in power = 0.305% per year
average increase in inflation rate (CPI), per year, with Labout in power = 0.031% per year
politicians may lie, but numbers don’t
She can go and do one. We’ve not seen any improvements with the last increases. Get the police to do what they’re paid to do and then maybe people would be willing to pay more.
We have endured massive rises for the Police Force, the invisible Police Force for years, where do they think we are getting the money from, most of us are just about surviving now. The Council can do the cuts, they cannot milk a stone. As for the Police Force, bring it back to Island and separate from mainland, that has cost us more than we reap.
The survey is a waste of time, they are not asking for your views, just tick box options should you agree to increase this isn’t a survey it is an outcome of a decided increase which we are NOT agreeing to in any shape or form. We are well aware as is the PM the state the country is in and the Council really need to justify any increase they decide to make next year or complete anarchy may start in the UK. PEOPLE ARE STRUGGLING NOW AND NOT ONLY THOSE ON BENEFITS BUT ALSO MANY WHO ARE TOO PROUND TO SAY SO.
There is very clearly a button to choose the option of NO increase!
spend the budget on everyone equally instead of playing your rainbow indentity politics with our overwhelmingly traditional landscape..bin your mean tweets department , open the curtains and go for a walk and talk to islanders not just rainbows and unicorns.
Nothing against the boys in blue as they can face some horrible situations on our behalf. BUT they have been turned into glorified pen pushers and doing less and less time fighting crime and protecting the public.
It would seem that the law requires immaculate records of any police actions by the officers themselves, WHY?
Don’t the police wear body cams now to cover incidents? These reports could be done by some efficient girl/boy who would be glad of the job. This would help get police out and about on our streets.
What does Donna actually do? Apert from asking for money’
Donna would you be happy paying for something you don’t get, you bet you wouldn’t, enough is enough.
Ah yes, the precept.
Aren’t we supposed to be paying for the police in our council tax already which means this is just a stealth way to increase council tax beyond the set limits by calling it a precept.
It’s a joke and a bad one at that and I for one am sick of these unacceptable stealth rises.
Get the police out on the streets, make them visible, make them a deterrent. At the moment no-one expects to see a police officer on the street. The criminals know this as do the rest of us.
It’s alright having them show their faces at Pride events etc where I seem to remember they even had a marquee encouraging people to report hate crimes, but we need them doing the job all the time, not just at these high profile events. The only people who don’t want a visible police presence on the streets are the criminals.
Maybe we should make the payment of the Police Precept optional.
Those who don’t pay are charged for police time on a pay-as-you-go basis.
So just filled in the survey. I opted for the ‘Other’ funding option and requested a decrease in funding. Strangely from that point onward there were no questions asking me what services I would like less of. There were only questions asking me what more services I would like.
I would rather have services reduced and pay less because the issues which concern me most are not tackled effectively anyway.
If cuts have to be made, then cut this person’s job.
Get rid of this position, save money. Our council will be planning another huge rise. For the floating bridge and there pet project, the do nothing, feckless.
£10 extra a year on a Band D property is no big deal is it. What’s the alternative…….drug and drink drivers, speeders, anti social behaviour, kids smashing everything up they can get their immature, grubby little hands on………the list goes on and on. If cuts happen the island will be out of control as far as law breakers’ and illegal activities happening in higher numbers.
We need our Police force more than ever.
I don’t mind paying for the police , they get a raw deal, they can’t be everywhere….
I object to paying for the floating bridge fiasco…
And for electric car’s , new computer system, air conditioning, pension pot, new heating and led lights in an underused council office….
I don’t agree in paying more for cuts in services….
To be honest I don’t agree with our waste of space Council and councillors or MP s …..
The Police and Crime Commissioner for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight has 17 people on her staff, some on huge salaries. Perhaps there is an opportunity for some cuts there, same old story, empire building at its finest.
Sound’s like to many chiefs and not enough Indians! !!!!!!!
I am sure those on the ground would love more officers, same with hospital management .
It appears the council also have to many chiefs as well.
Even charities are the same, yet it is those out there that get moaned at !!!!!!!
Didnt you lot just lock us all up and harrass anyone not complying with made up laws?? bit rich asking for money after you aided the economic collapse of the UK.
“the policing precept, which is paid by every household in the county”, no it’s not paid by everyone, only those that pay c/tax and have a level of income above benefits. Police should be police not sat at a computer in office with endless process and paper work . However I would be happier to pay this extra to pay for more prison’s. Why can’t police be self funded by fines/convictions/results/proceeds of crime etc and by law breakers not the inocent members of public.
Just done survey – why do surveys/consultations only ask questions in a way to get answers they want . What the hell has my ethnic background, age or sexuality got to do with whether I agree / disagree with increasing tax ,so discriminating !
As I’ve been saying for years, get rid of the police and crime commissioners. They have a massive budget that would be better spent within the police service and employing police officers. This is just a sneaky way to get politics into the police. There never had been, and never should be any place for politics in policing. Give control of Police forces back to the Chief Constables.
The survey, like the IOW councils, is not a survey. Just an attempt to listen. They will just go and do it.
As we know from the floating bridge, honesty. transparency and accountability do not exist.
Instant saving by abolishing the PCC jobs, year on year it delivers no benefit .. it may not save a massive amount in the grand scheme of things .. but not seeing money thrown at the PCC function anymore is a blessing . Not fit for purpose .
Council Tax is so unfair.
If a person went to a shop to buy an Item and it was too expensive you might not buy it or buy a cheaper version.
Council tax you don’t have a choice.
Corrupt Governments and Councils take whatever figure they want.
Tax Payers do not have a choice.
What annoys me is that MPs don’t even pay Council tax.
More excuses for rises,I’m sure council tax goes up every year same old excuse, need policing ect, still 2 or 3 day wait if u report a crime or u been burgled ,y don’t they just admit the taxes r needed for there boo boos , floating bridge fiasco, new traffic system to ease dual carriageway, ect ect ect
Time to Abolish Council Tax and stick it on income tax
The plan from day 1 was to crash the economy.
Interest rates are going up on a regular basis
Fuel going up
Groceries going up
Council tax going up
WAGES ARE NOT GOING UP!
Does the festival and other island events pay for the policing? If not then maybe they should or pay in entirety.
Everyone just went along with the corruption because they thought that property prices always rise and owners can just charge more and more extortionate rents. If associations can make a profit charging social rent then why not get private landlords to adhere to social rent rates or else they will be deemed anti social rent landlords. This is a prime denominator of our exploitation society.
Think ALL islanders should withhold/don’t pay one months council tax next year … be a great day in court when they fine us all – party time and no bloody police to do anything about it !
STOP Idiots parking on Pavements on the Island
and I would be happy to pay a bit more.
GREAT PRESTON ROAD RYDE outside the Council Houses
Parking on Pavements is the IW Norm!!
