The Isle of Wight Council is to embark on a new round of consultation on traffic regulation orders, this time for villages and neighbourhoods in the South of the Island.
The proposals, covering Ventnor, Wroxall, Niton and Chale have originated through suggestions made by members of the public, or through Town and Parish councillors or local ward councillors and are available for public comment from now until 28th October.
One of the biggest changes proposed is the removal of parking on St Catherine’s Street in Ventnor. Notoriously narrow, the decision has been taken that double yellow lines should be introduced.
Traffic Regulation Orders can mean changes to, or the introduction of parking restrictions such as double yellow lines, one-way streets or no right or left turns.
This will be the second set of proposals from Isle of Wight Council to be made available via online surveys. The previous consultation in July covered several neighbourhoods in the east of the Island, including many parts of Ryde. The availability of the surveys on the council website saw a 10-fold increase in the usual number of responses to proposed Traffic Regulation Orders.
Councillor Phil Jordan, Cabinet member for Transport and Infrastructure, has said:
“We are delighted that making these consultations available online has seen such a significant increase in public participation. We look forward to receiving a similar level of public engagement with our next round of traffic regulation orders.
Councillor Jordan has emphasised that getting involved in the formal consultation process is important:
“It really can make a difference – and we are listening. Public comment has sometimes lead us to amend proposals and in the case of two schemes in Cowes recently, withdraw them entirely.
Isle of Wight Council is working with Town and Parish Councils and local ward councillors to ensure proposals that are generated and reach the formal consultation process have already had some degree of public support.
Comments of support and objections can only be legally considered if a full address is given whether the response comes in by letter, email or by survey.

Unbelievable! You can never find a parking space in Ventnor as it is and they want to reduce them even more. Ventnor will be going the same way as Newport then, dead. Well done stupid council.
The Council have stated that these proposals have been collected from suggestions and complaints made since 2013. Also these proposals may take up to two years from now before a final decision is made. Then of course there is the delay resulting from contract placing and work programming.
Thats about 11 years from the first of the complaints/suggestions being made.
Why do we put up with incompetence of Local Government?
This is the IWCC forcing people to park in their own over priced car parks. It’s all about ripping of us Joe public.
Would this be anywhere near the location that is losing spaces to allow for the building of a public convenience?
A public convenience that is of course needed by all and sundry, yet not needed enough to have allowed the other newish public convenience to be knocked down and sold off that was just across the way. I think we all know now that the IWCC only see money. I parked near the Mayflower in Southampton recently.
It was about £4.80p for 4 hours. 4 HOURS IWCC! You lot are squeezing the pips out of us residents one way or another! Little wonder tourists avoid the Island. Isle of Pocket Picking now.
Stop Idiots parking on Pavements.
Parking permits Islandwide to help the climate.
So many households fill the Roads and Streets with unnessecary
vehicles.
If vehicle owners had to pay a permit charge for each vehicle they own,
they will soon decrease their surplus collection of vehicles.
therefore making it easier for all vehicle owners to be able to park their vehicles.
As long as uneducated morons don’t park on pavements I don’t mind what
IW Council do.
Just STOP morons parking on Pavements.
It’s 2022 employ persons who Tow away vehicles that park on pavements
It will create jobs for people and make pavements safe for everyone.
Ventnor will become a ghost town
I went to Ventnor once.
More money grubbing by a left-wing anti-motorist council.
